Show 28 TENTH ANNUAL REPORT in detail and considerable attention is given to the study of atomic and molecular weights, the balancing of equations and the solving of problems. Daily laboratory work. Some standard work will be used as a text. QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS, Prescribed in second year Scientific. Five recitations per week during the last half year. This course is devoted to the chemical analysis of salt, solutions, minerals, mineral waters, etc. Blowpipe analysis receives some attention. Laboratory work based on Fresenius' Qualitative Chemical Analysis. QUANTITATIVE ANALYSIS AND ORGANIC CHEMISTRY. Quantitative Analysis and Organic Chemistry is open to those who have completed the first year's course in chemistry. Three recitations per week throughout the year. The work will be based upon Remsen's Organic Chemistry and some standard work on Quantitative Analysis. ASTRONOMY. A course in Elementary Astronomy is given during the second half year. Five recitations per week. Lectures, recitations and observations of the more simple movements of the heavenly bodies. Howe's Lessons in Astronomy. NATURAL HISTORY. J. G. LIND. BOTANY. Prescribed in second year Normal and Literary and first year Scientific. Five recitations per week during the first half year. Lectures, recitations and field work leading to a general knowledge of botany. Structure, morphology, adaptation and fertilization are considered. Special attention is devoted to WEBER STAKE ACADEMY. 29 the systematic study of our local flora. Each student is required to present an herbarium of fifty pressed and mounted specimens at the close of the year. Bergen's Botany and Coulter's Manual. ZOOLOGY. Prescribed in third year Normal and first year Scientific. Five recitations per week during the first half year. Lectures, recitations and field work. The aim of this course is to give a general view of the animal kingdom. Typical forms are dissected and studied in detail. Classification, morphology, distribution and present habitat, receive attention. The work is based upon Packard's Briefer Course. Packard's Advanced Course and Orton's Comparative Zoology for reference. PHYSIOLOGY. Five recitations per week during the first half year. The aim in this course is to give a thorough knowledge of anatomy, physiology and hygiene. Especial attention will be given to the nervous system, the special senses, and the effects of narcotics. Lectures, recitations and the study of charts and skeletons. MINERALOGY AND GEOLOGY. J. G. LIND. MINERALOGY. Mineralogy is prescribed in fourth year Normal and third year Scientific. Five recitations per week during the last half year. Class recitations, lectures and study of methods of determination of the more common minerals. The laboratory work includes the identification of minerals by means of blowpipe and simple chemical tests. Students are required to keep accurate notes on work done in laboratory. |
