Show 16 SIXTEENTH ANNUAL REPORT to the Church considered in the order of their reception, a brief study of the Book of Mormon and the evidences of its authenticity, general church information, training in the administration of gospel ordinances, and incidents of missionary experience. Three hours per week throughout the year. III. Scripture Reading. First half yearA selected course of reading aloud from the Four Gospels, intended to train the students in the art of reading and to illustrate certain leading events and teachings in the life of the Savior. Second half year: A similar course from the Acts and Epistles, with certain selections from the Old Testament, chiefly to illustrate doctrinal principles. Throughout the course attention is paid to correct pronunciation, articulation, and to the meaning of the text. Five hours per week throughout the year. IV. SingingPractice in part singing, the object being to acquaint the young men with the most useful and popular missionary hymns. In this course the Y. M. M. I. A. and Missionary song book is used. Two hours per week throughout the year. In connection with courses 1 and 2, special attention will be given to missionary correspondence, theme writing, testimony bearing, and argumentation and extemporaneous speaking on the principles of the Gospel. MUSIC. REGULAR COURSE. This course will include the principles of sight reading, mixed and male chorus work. The sight reading course will be a progressive arrangement of studies Commencing with exercises based upon the simple harmonic combination to be found in the major and minor scales, and continuing through easy stages to the more difficult. In both chorus classes special attention will be given to artistic singing as applied to chorus work. CHORISTERS CLASS. Realizing the great need of competent conductors of music, a choristers' class will be organized in which will be taught the principles of singing, conducting, and chorus work. The object is to develop men who will be able to conduct music successfully in a ward capacity. WEBER STAKE ACADEMY. 17 Only those who receive calls from the President of the Stake will be entitled to take this course. The regular entrance fee of ten dollars will be required, the members having the privilege of registering for other studies for which they are prepared. PREPARATORY BRANCHES. GrammarReed and Kellogg's Higher lessons in English, complete. Abundant practice in composition work. Five half hour recitations per week throughout the year. Arithmetic 11.--Hall's Arithmetic completed. Wentworth's High School Arithmetic for supplementary work. Five half hour recitations per week throughout the year. GeographyTarr McMurry's Complete Geography with special reference to Utah and Weber County. Five half hour recitations per week throughout the year. Drawing--Work from objects, with some attention to decorative design and historic ornament. Two hour recitations per week throughout the year. PenmanshipVertical and slanting penmanship. Five quarter hour recitations per week throughout the yean OrthographyThis study is required of all Preparatory students. Five quarter hour recitations per week throughout the year. ReadingSelections from standard authors. Five hour recitations per week throughout the year. HistoryFive half-hour recitations per week throughout the year. COMMERCIAL COURSE. BookkeepingThe Ellis system of "learning to do by doing," is used as an outline. The theory of this system is that the student is a proprietor doing business in his own name and with his own capital. Bookkeeping and the transaction of business are arts requiring, for their intelligent mastery, a knowledge of many technical terms as well as a ready familiarity with a number of special forms and business papers.
