Each student is a class by himself, and as his work differs from all others, there is no opportunity to copy. After six months' work in this branch, according to the ability of the student, a course in practical work is offered. In this the student does actual business with other students, also with the bank, wholesale house, commission house, and other offices. The object is to "make the transactions in as realistic a manner as possible and then to find the best method of recording them. PhonographyThe aim of this department is to supply the constantly increasing demand for good practical stenographers. Nine out of ten of those who secure employment as stenographers find it a stepping-stone to advancement in every direction, Our graduates are now holding positions of trust all over the State. The time required to complete this study depends upon the student. We offer a two years' course, but many are able to be-come expert in a shorter time. Our students have been able to maintain a speed of from l00 to 150 words per minute. The instruction includes the fundamental principles, business correspondence in great variety, legal matter, invoices, circulars, speeches, etc. Classes in session all day. TypewritingTypewriting is a sister art with shorthand. No shorthand writer is all that he should be unless he is skilled in the use of the typewriter. Students are drilled in the transcription of their shorthand notes, in commercial correspondence, legal forms, envelop addressing, etc. The school is fully equipped with the best machines in office use. Commercial LawThis course deals with the laws of trade and finance, how to draw up papers in legal form, common usages and practice pertaining to contracts, partnerships, corporations, in fact everything pertaining to common law. ArithmeticApplicants for this course must have completed the eighth grade work of the district schools. However, men and women of mature thought are capable of pursuing this subject to a successful termination without such preparation. The fundamentals of arithmetic are discussed; fractions, interest, discount, and commercial transactions receive special attention. English-This course includes grammar, composition, correspondence, and spelling. Qualified students will be admitted to any of the higher English courses. Commercial GeographyThis course is designed to give the students an intelligent understanding of the products, industries, and commerce of the principal nations of the globe. In this work, special attention is given to the products and industries of the United States, and the relation which this nation bears to the world. In the beginning, some attention will also be given to political geography, for the purpose of refreshing the student's mind on the subject, and of giving an intelligent basis for the work. PEDAGOGY, Theory of Teaching.Required of third year students in the Normal course. This course embraces a study of the spirit, habits, and responsibility of the teacher; organization and government of schools; the teacher's relation to the parents, to the pupils, and to his profession. Two hours per week throughout the year. TrainingRequired of fourth year students in the Normal course. Methods of presenting the various studies in the grades are carefully considered; selection and arrangement of material for instruction; outlining lessons, planning courses, and making programs, are features of this course. Four hours per week throughout the year. PedagogyRequired of fourth year students in the Normal course. This course comprises a discussion of the purpose and means of education; training and government; the principles of educational systems that have been in vogue, the development of educational thought, showing how the present systems have grown out of those of the past, Four hours per week throughout the year. |
