PedagogyThis course embraces a discussion of the purpose and means of education, the principles of educational systems that have been in vogue, the evolution of educational thought, showing how the present systems have grown out of those of the past. Painter's History of Education. Home LifeThis course will deal with those problems that pertain to real home-making. Environment that will tend to produce physical, mental and spiritual growth in the home will be treated. The psychology of the home and various phases of child culture will be prevalent throughout the course. Second semester five hours per week. The first semester will be devoted to the study of the oriental nations, Greece and Rome. The second semester Mediaeval and Modern history will be studied. Three hours per week through-out the year. Myer's General History. Ancient History [History of the Orient and Greece] Required of second year students in the Classical course. A general survey of oriental nations, with special reference to their contribution to Western civilization; the development of the Athenian constitution and the institutions of Sparta; the city-state, with reasons for its development; Athenian culture will be studied as the highest type of Grecian civilization; the contact with the East, and the spread of Hellenism. Three hours per week first half year. First half of West's Ancient World, or Myers' Ancient History, Revised. Ancient History [Roman History]Required of second year students in the Classical course. Primitive Italy, the beginnings of Rome, the monarchy, the aristocracy, and the republic; the empire, the introduction of Christianity, and the invasions of the barbarians. Special attention will be given to the political history and to the development of Roman law. Three hours per week second half year. Second half of West's Ancient World, or Myer's Ancient History, Revised. Modern HistoryOpen as elective. The Holy Roman empire, the Crusades, the feudal system, the Reformation, political revolutions, and the growth of ideas of religious liberty and political rights. Three hours per week throughout the year. West's Modern History, or Myers' Mediaeval and Modern History, Rivised. |
