Show STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS, ACTIVITIES AND PUBLICATIONS THE STUDENT BODY OF THE WEBER NORMAL COLLEGE is an organization of the College, High School and Business College students for the purpose of regulating student activities.. The executive body of this organization is known as the Board of Control. Its membership is composed of the president, vice president, and secretary and treasurer of the Student Body, the president of each class, the president of the school, and one student and one faculty member chosen by these officers shall constitute the Board of Control, which shall have general supervision over all Student Body affairs. THE STUDENT BODY presents, during the winter, a standard modern play. Places in the cast are competitive. THE WEBER DEBATING ASSOCIATION comprises all classes of the College. Every year each class selects a team to compete in the interclass debates. The names of the winners in these contests are inscribed upon a silver cup which was presented by the class in 1905. Try-outs are held to determine which students shall represent the college in the regular state contests. THE STUDENT BODY PUBLIC SPEAKING ACTIVITIES are open to all students. Five contests are held annually, and prizes are awarded to the successful competitors. FirstThe James L. Barker Extemporaneous Speaking Contest. To the class attaining the highest number of credits in this contest the James L. Barker Cup is awarded, and to the student receiving first place a cash prize of $10 is given by Professor Barker. SecondThe J. S. Lewis Extemporaneous Speaking Contest; the J. S. Lewis medal is awarded to the winner by the J. S. Lewis Company. ThirdThe Grant Oratorical Contest, and to the successful competitor President H. J. Grant presents an autographed book. [6] FourthThe Edward I. Rich Oratorical Contest; this contest is between students of the Ogden High School and the Weber Normal College. Dr. Edward I. Rich awards $30 to the student winning first place in the contest and $20 to the student winning second place. fifthThe Sons of the American Revolution Oratorical Contest. This contest is also between students of the Ogden High School and the Weber Normal College. It is fostered by an association known as the Sons of the American Revolution. A gold medal is awarded. The Public Service Bureau is an organization within the Student Body whose purpose is to furnish gratuitously a complete or partial programme of music, readings, or speeches for any recognized organization, either religious or civic. The Acorn is the school year book, and its management is under the supervision of the Board of Control. The Weber Herald is the bi-weekly news organ of the students of the Weber Normal College. The Weber Literary Journal is a monthly magazine devoted to essays, poetry and short stories. The Athletic Activities of the Student Body are baseball, track, basketball, and football. These activities are open to all boys of the school. THE COLLEGE PURPOSE AND AIMS FirstTo give instruction in the science and art of teaching, and in such branches of knowledge as shall qualify teachers for their profession. Furthermore, the school was organized to assist in supplying the great demand that is constantly being felt for teachers in the public schools of Weber, Ogden city, the State of Utah and surrounding states. SecondTo offer two years of general college work. COURSES FirstTwo years of general college work prepare students for advanced work in medicine, law, commerce, engineering, and the sciences. [7] |
