Title |
LeMay Leaflet |
Description |
The Miscellaneous Artifact category of the Harrisville Virtual History Museum contains various objects that did not fit into other categories. |
Biographical/Historical Note |
Named after General Curtis LeMay, the front of this "LeMay Leaflet," shows five B-29 Super Fortress Bombers dropping payloads onto unseen targets. The bombs appear to be falling directly on a half-border of circles, containing the names of eleven cities. B-29s dropped millions of propaganda leaflets like this one in May, June, and July of 1945, in an attempt to persuade the Japanese populace that continuing the war was hopeless and they should surrender. Lorin W. Crowther brought this original leaflet back with him when he returned home from WWII. Written in Japanese on the back of the leaflet is an appeal to civilians discovering the leaflet to flee to avoid being hit with conventional bombs. It was a form of physiological warfare intended to influence the Japanese people to force their leaders to surrender.
