Demands of the times, according to procedures that took place, ignored sympathy for their desires and wishes. Consolidation of schools meant a departure from what school authorities termed outdated, inefficient school systems of the past to make way for a system more in line with advancing times to meet needs of increasing population. Regardless of the well-founded intent of this presumably progressive move, a wave of dissatisfaction swept the various communities of the country, which in instances, reached proportions almost uncontrollable. It became difficult for the economy-minded to reconcile themselves to the abandonment of adequate, costly, substantial buildings in several districts, and afterwards transfer children at an enormous expense in costly buses to another school. However, school patrons generally conceded that it was possible with a number of teachers -72- (Fig. 7-13) Slaterville School Class 1920 Front:(sitting)L-R; Jessie Ogden, Arnold I.
