Show THE ACORN "KEEP OUT" THIS IS OUR BUSY DAY EDITORIAL The Program of Our New College Department People from all parts of the county are making inquiries concerning the two years of college work that is going to be given in Weber next year. Some are doubtful whether or not the college courses will be up to the standard so that they will receive state recognition. It will be interesting to all to learn that the detailed plans of our college department will be presented Friday, March 24th, the State Superintendent Gowns for inspection. If he passes favorably upon them, there can remain little doubt regarding the quality of the work that will be given. In case he does not pass favorably upon them we will continue to improve our school until it meets the State requirements in every particular and this will be done before next season's work begins. In order to give the public further assurance, the teachers of college subjects will all submit their credits to Superintendent Gowns so that these instructions may be recommended by the state to teach college work. Everyone realizes that there is a wonderful field in Ogden for a college, but we must now convince the public that Weber is the proper place for it. New to the founding of the Academy itself, the installation of the College Department next fall will be the most important move in the history of educational institutions in Weber County. Training Facilities Through arrangements that have been made with Superintendent Petterson and the Weber County Board of Education, Normal Students will be permitted to do their practice teaching in the County schools. All practice teaching will be under the supervision of the director of the Normal Department as well as the County Superintendent and the County Supervisors. Qualified students may be employed by the county to do substitute work. Training is primarily for second year college students it may teach before they complete the Advanced Normal Course. ACORN 8 Unnoticed Lessons Of the numerous problems that confront man, none is of greater importance in his daily life, none stays with him with more persistency, and none has been of greater interest to him since the beginning of time than that of adjusting himself properly in response to those forces which influence his life. This question has been the object of study for psychologists and the daily food for reflection and regret among the multitudes. Securing the proper responses to given stimuli or, in other words, acting in the right way so that we shall experience joy rather than suffer retribution when we face the results of our actions, hasty or considered, is the meaning of a happy, successful life. In considering this question we must accept the conclusion of noted psychologists that we never do a thing" without having once thought of it. So in providing for these responses our first step must be preparatory, or we must provide the proper environment and influences, so as to stimulate and encourage right thinking". Soaring high above all superficial influences is the influence that Heaven ordained teacher Nature. We are now at the period of the year which is, in the dictionary of nature, the renewal of life; the time when all things prepare to contribute to the fullness of life, beauty and strength which make summer a paradise. Let us assume a parallel case between nature and youth, and see the harmony and strength that can be brought into human life by following nature's directions. Nature abounds with lessons essential to the teachings of the qualities so desired by man. Let him hear the rushing torrents full of energy and motion and the inspired to thoughts and acts full of life and vigor. Let him examine the stones in the bed of the streams and from their smoothness discover the effectiveness of united and persevering labor. Let him learn his lesson of hardiness and promptness by watching the tiny violet, first to make its sweet-scented advent and appreciated the more for it. And in her store of snow, shadowed by the lofty mountains, let him learn that in the economy of nature moisture must be provided for later in the year to accomplish the growth of her flowers, shrubs and foods for mankind. Let him learn of the perfect organization of the facilities of nature and how each flower, large and small, has its particular time to come forth. And looking into the clear, starry firmament, let him learn that beyond and above it all is the one Power which governs with an eye and a heart that know when the small sparrow falls. When this end shall have been reached ,then will man's responses be higher and nobler. |
