Show 4 THE ACORN ately attired as if for parade, the Emperor said: "My general, you are a brave man." O, let us praise the Lord! O, let us praise the Lord, our God and Mighty King, And songs of gladness to His honor sing! O, let it ever be our high ideal, To worship him with dilligence and zeal; To do forever what is good and right; To do always what's pleasing in His sight! O, let us honor Him, the Lord of Lords, And love to live according to His words! O, let us love to learn what Christ has taught, For He, has to us all redemption brought! O, let us love and worship God above, And to our fellow men extend our love! And let us love whatever God has made, Yea, live in love on earth, as He has said! Then, friends, we surely shall on earth succeed; God blesses those who His com- mandments heed. O, let us praise His name in all the earth! He will redeem each soul whom He gave birth! If here we live as Christ, His Son has taught, From death to life forever eternal we are brought. Niels F. Green. SIN. Just as a vine will put out its tendrils to find a suitable support on which to fasten itself, and to grow stronger and larger day by day and year by year, until it absorbs the very life of that support, or as-a monster will coil itself about its victim, cautiously at first, until it finds a chance to strike, so will sin entwine its meshes about its victim, making them stronger and stronger until the victim is powerless to uncoil himself. Sin comes in many forms. It may come in the form of a mere joke, a little tale, an action, a word, a habit, deceit, untruth, cowardice, envy, hate, revenge, or crime. It creeps in when it is least expected, dressed in truth and honor, appearing to the unwary, attractive, as the spider's gausy web is to the unheeding fly. It does not stop at one re-repulsion, but assumes another form and tries to force its way into another and more vital part, grappling until it is able to hold THE ACORN 5 the victim in its grasp. If the victim be strong enough it can never touch him If he be weak it may so entangle him that the more he struggles to free himself the faster and tighter it clings to him; but if he prove his courage and fight with a determination to win he will gain power, a little at a time, until he may stand out victorious, with the enemy crushed and helpless at his feet. A little boy was once asked bow he learned to skate "Oh, by getting-up every time I fell down," he replied. This is the spirit that leads men and armies to victory. It is not the fall but the not getting up, that is defeat. Ex The word success has many definitions Some men measure success by a standard of their own creation. Leslies Weekly. "Well boys," said the school-master, on a mild March morning as he prepared to take a seat, I suppose you are all prepared for an early spring?" "Yes sir," said the small boy who was invariably blamed for everything, "but I want to tell you I didn't put it on your chair." Then the schoolmaster discovered the pin and the spring was postponed. Ex. For though among the learned host, Book after book I taste and test; Of those that truly please me most, My father's check book is the best. Ex. The Crimson's story of "A Sunday Morning in Guatemala" is very interesting and descriptive. We are always glad to have the papers from other schools reach us, especially when they come early in the month. A little boy had been troubled with the toothache and went to the dentist's to have it extracted. When the dentist showed him the tooth, the child said. "Can I have that?" 'Certainly; but what do you want it for?" -Well,' I'll take it home, and put some sugar in it, and then watch the blame thing ache" Ex. |
