Show ORTHODOX Tom Clark At 21, Devon Alexander Charlton might as well have been alone in the world, because he rarely saw his mother any more. After his father died, his mother brought him to the city, she thought he should go to college. Mrs. Charlton found work for herself and he did go to school for nearly two years. He went to school until he became bored with school. "The trivialities of the educational system bore me." he had said. He decided to "find himself" and left his mother's apartment to move into a one room garret where he pored over the works of Locks, Mills, and Paine by the naked light bulb suspended over the middle of the room. "Freedom, that's the answer," he muttered, "to be completely happy a man must be completely free." Devon pondered over the enslavement of everyone he saw. The cold light of winter mornings witnessed him walking slowly past the tenements and brownstones toward the public library. During this time he conducted his "research". With his briefcase clutched tightly in hand he strolled and watched the world move past in the mad race for something or other. He saw a girl in a waitress' uniform running for the corner, apron in one hand and bus token in the other. 11 |
