Liliom By MAE STRAND Impressive in professional interpretation, the fall quarter drama was "Liliom," a Ferenc Molnar classic. Its symbolic abstractions were interpreted with sustained finesse by an experienced cast of townspeople and students. As a Community Theater presentation, it was directed by the Weber College dramatic department with Carl White in charge. Under the direction of Mr. White, a new endeavor was begun in the Young People's Theater. In place of the popular cellar theater, arrangements were made to present plays in collaboration with the city recreation office. In this way, plays will be shown in schools and churches, as was the Halloween play, "Zelda," which thrilled some 2500 to 3000 elementary school students in the Ogden area. Cellar efforts are not abandoned, however, but through the latter means wider audiences will be reached. The workshop group is now working on a mystery thriller, "Suspect," which will be presented early in the new quarter. After its completion, the enterprise will go forward under Thatcher Allred's direction. Again one-act plays will be stressed in collaboration with the city recreation department. Spring performances will be held out-of-doors as well as inside. Plays in prospect include "Good-bye My Fancy" in January, also under the direction of Mr. White. This will be followed by a play brought in from the University of Utah, the delightful "The Silver Whistle." The final spring production under Mr. Allred is yet to be named. Concerning a coming event, Thatcher Allred, drama department director, makes this announcement: "Ambitious enterprises this season in the field of drama contemplate the appearance of Moroni Olsen, a former Ogdenite, to direct one of the local productions. Mr. Olsen is a graduate of Weber who has become famous in radio, the legitimate stage and motion pictures, This actor's appearance depends upon the fixing of dates and communications." Page 8 D.
