D’Orr Cozzens,. 2197 Keller Lane John Glenn Tuesday morning with his home radio set (3540 South), heard the radio transmission by Astronaut Lt. Col. John and Glenn somewhere heard him describe strange luminous particles outside the space capsule. between Hawaii and Australia on the astronaut’s first orbital pass. Col. Glenn could not explain the luminous particles, Mr. Cozzens said. The amateur radio operator, who is director of engi- | neering for the Intermountain Network, tuned in to the astronaut’s broadcast on. Bes frequency cles. Another near an A a2 a 7 Ping oactpe™ anal "Gretta passed the frequency to him. “It was just like he was _here in the room with me,” Mr. Cozzens said. For 10 minutes the radio engineer clearly heard the dialogue between Col. Glenn and tracking stations in the Pacific Ocean. — He also picked up weak transmissions from the as- tronaut: when he passed over the Atlantic somewhere between Bermuda and Africa. At most times during the morning, he could hear clearly the tracking stations in California, the Pacific and Cape Canaveral. But the astronaut’s voice was seldom “loud and clear.” Col. Glenn’s conversation heard by Mr. Cozzens dealt with the luminous particles, with inside and outside tem- peratures and _ pressures, some trouble with the guidance system, and a storm off the coast of California. Mr. Cozzens’ amateur ra- dio rig is an elaborate affair ‘with three tall antennas outside his home which can be directionally controlled from inside the house. Mr. Cozzens lamented the fact that he could. not record the transmission. “I had no idea I’d be able to pick up the astronaut’s transmission,” W. D/Orr Cozzens, ham radio operator, heard dialogue from space capsule during orbit. he said, add- ing that he had Jent-his recorder to. a soOn who Bountiful. lives in | |
