By Carolyn Howard Tribune Staff Writer : It’s not easy but it’s possible to live on a shoestring and get an education at the same time! '@ Mr. and Mrs. James M. Parks who live in Stadium Village at 368 Beta St. (16th East), with two sons, Cary, 4, and Steven, 2, prove it. How can two people with a family go to School without parental assistance? Takes _ It takes Planning, lots of work, Ambition planning and ambi- tion. You really have to want that education to give up little luxuries Mr. Parks works for it. 40 hours a week at the Veterans Administration Hospital at night and Mrs, Parks helps by working at the Salt Lake County Hospital during the summer, Mrs. Parks’ grades haven’t suffered, In fact, she recently was awarded a scholarship to the College of Nursing because of a grade point average above a B. When Mrs. Parks graduates in June she'll be able to work and relieve her husband until he receives his master’s degree in sociology in 1959. Help Each Other The Parks help each other | study. “Our fields are so closely related that it’s easy to discuss our texts and that helps us to remem- ber little details we’d normally forget,” claims Mrs. Parks. Mrs. Parks has run up against a few delays, like Cary and Steven. She found it necessary To help just a little, Mrs. Parks makes such things as pajamas and shirts for the men in her life during the summer. | Grocery shopping is done in the evenings after the little ones are tucked into bed and Mrs. Parks prepares casseroles and stews the night before and puts these dishes in the oven when they are needed. An ironer, lent to Mrs. Parks by her mother, Kelps. a; lot, tod)" | Baby Sitters While Mrs. Parks is in school (she goes from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.), Cary and Steven attend Neighborhood House and would. go on Saturdays, too, if they could. On weekends the boys go to see Grandma with their parents or the family drives to Alta and Mommy, Cary and Steven watch Daddy ski. The unit that the Parks live in has two rooms, a kitchen-living room, divided by a bookcase filled with a very impressive library, and one bedroom. As Mrs. Parks dressed the children after their naps she laughed, “It seems someone is always sleeping in this bedroom.” _- One wall in the living room is due for a new paint job. The Parks will paint it them- selves in a cheerful turquoise shade to set off Some wooden masks that Mr. Parks brought from Mexico a few years ago.
