Students will be given opportunity to practice, within the building, during school hours, by making application at the office. Credits will be determined by the pupil's industry and advancement, which in all cases must be left for the teacher to decide. COURSES OF INSTRUCTION. Sight Singing. Joseph Ballantyne. Sight Singing a, b.The purpose of this study is to teach the pupil to read music at sight; to hear mentally a tone and be able to produce it. The year's work includes major and minor scales, clefs, bass and treble, rhythmic values, pitch studies and practical singing in one, two and four parts. Two periods per week throughout the year. One-half unit credit. Sight Singing c, d.Continuation of a, b. Two periods per week throughout the year. One-half unit credit. Choir. Joseph Ballantyne. Choir.The choir is composed of 120 mixed voices Any pupil with sufficient voice qualification is entitled to membership. The choicest kind of choruses, and part songs, by standard composers form a part of the repertoire of the choir, and are sung each morning at the devotional period. A cantata by one of the masters of music, is prepared each year, and has its rendition with orchestra at the annual commencement exercises. One-fourth unit credit. Foundation Work.Students desiring this work must be able to play their instruments, so that no time will be taken from the class for fundamental instructions in playing, which should already have been learned in private lessons. Material used. Easy arrangement of overtures, selections, dance and miscellaneous music. Two hours weekly. Credit 1/4 unit. B. Concert Orchestra.This organization takes part in the concerts and various entertainments where the extent of the school orchestra work can be judged. Students who have had experience sufficient to take this work may do so, provided the instrumentation of the orchestra will be correct. Two hours weekly. Credit 1/4 unit. A. Band Music.Requirements for entrance is ability to handle the instrument to the extent that no individual attention need be given the student. Review of the fundamentals of music, pitch, staff, clefs, time, signature, etc.; also easy exercises and selections will be practiced. Two hours weekly. Credit, unit. B. Open to those who are able to do correct work. Some of the features of this organization are playing to Student Body functions and school activities. Two hours weekly. Credit, 1/4 unit. Voice CulturePrivate. Joseph Ballantyne. Correct breathing, voice placement, resonance, tone quality and right production are illustrated and taught. Song interpretation in the simple forms and arias form the great operas and oratorios are given. One unit credit. |
