Show 24 TENTH ANNUAL REPORT SOLID GEOMETRY. In this course a thorough study is made of the properties of lines and planes in space, dihedral, and polyhedral angles, and polyhedrons, cylinders, cones and prisms; the measurement of surfaces, and areas and the volumes of cones, pyramids, cylinders, polyhedrons, and spheres; frustums of cones and pyramids; spherical segments and hemispheres. Books VI, VII, VIII, and IX of Wentworth's plane and solid geometry. Required of scientific students and elective with others. Five recitations per week during the last half year. TRIGONOMETRY. G. N. SORENSEN. This course embraces the study of the development of the general formulas of plane and spherical trigonometry, the solution of plane and spherical triangles, and practice in the use of logarithmic tables. Wentworth's Plane and Spherical Trigonometry with tables. Required of scientific students elective to others. Five recitations per week the first half year. GERMAN. RICHARD T. HAAG. First Year.---Five recitations per week. Joynes-Meissner's grammar, selections from the writings of Martin Luther. W. H. Carruth, and German reader with exercises; Joynes. The aim in this course will be to lay a thorough foundation for correct reading; to teach the essentials of German grammar and correct natural pronunciation. To relieve the work of its dry technicalities some conversation and memorizing of easy selections from classical writers is introduced. WEBER STAKE ACADEMY. 25 Second Year.Three recitations per week. Joynes-Meissners grammar, part II; Schiller's "Wilhelm Tell" complete. Selections from the "Stern" (a Latter-day Saints periodical published at Bern, Switzerland,) containing contributions of Professor Haag, will be studied, and an attempt made to introduce the student to the spirit of the German people and their literature. Third Year.Semi-weekly recitations; rapid reading of Goetlie's Faust, part I, and Lessing's prose. GERMAN CONVERSATION. Three recitations weekly. A special course is offered for the benefit of Latter-day Saint missionaries and students de-siring to prepare for studies or a visit in Europe. Thorough lessons based on object teaching, associating perception directly with the foreign expressions, and a practical introduction to conversation will be given. From the first no English will be spoken, in order continually to drill the student's ear and tongue. Explanations of new words, idioms, or other difficulties not understood will receive individual attention after class recitations. It is strongly urged that members of this class, not already possessed of an elementary knowledge of German, also join the first year's course as announced above FRENCH. R. T. HAAG. First Year.Five recitations per week, Dreysprings, "Easy Lessons in French;" Chardenal's complete French course and Super's preparatory reader are the text books employed.
