Show 30 TENTH ANNUAL REPORT Dana's Manual of Mineralogy is used as reference. GEOLOGY. Geology is prescribed in fourth year Normal and third year Scientific. Five recitations per week during the first half year. The agencies operating at the present time are studied as a preparation for the study of historical geology. The "Great Basin" with its well defined fault-scarps, shore lines, alluvial cones, saline lakes, and ore deposits receive special attention. Field work and the collection of specimens; recitations and lectures. Leconte's Compend of Geology is the text used. Leconte's Elements and Dana's Geology are used as reference. HISTORY AND LITERATURE. G. N. SORENSEN. GENERAL HISTORY. General History is required of the students in the Normal, Literary, and General Science courses, and elective in others. Three recitations per week throughout the year. During the first semester, Ancient History is studied, dealing principally with Greece and Rome, and some consideration is given to the history of Persia and Egypt and other eastern countries of antiquity having an important influence on subsequent nations. The second semester is devoted to the study of the history of medieval and modern Europe, special attention being given to effects upon Europe by the downfall of Rome, and the absorption of her civilization by the barbarians in to whose hands she fell; the consolidation of the many tribes into the modern European nations; the revival of learning, and the growth of constitutional and religious liberty. Myer's Ancient, and WEBER STAKE ACADEMY. 31 Myer's Medieval and Modern History will be used as a text books. ENGLISH HISTORY. English History is required of Students in the Literary course and elective in others; five recitations per week during first half year. A thorough study is made of the early history of England; the early conquests by the Germanic tribes; the consolidation of England into a single state; the growth of constitutional, civil, and religious liberty within its borders, and the gradual rise to national prominence to the foremost place it occupies among modern governments. Montgomery's English History. Five recitations per week during the first half year. UNITED STATES HISTORY. United States History is required of Normal and Literary students, and elective with others. Five recitations per week during the last half year. This course assumes a fair knowledge of the history given in the eighth grade of the district schools. Careful consideration is given to the colonization of America, and the period of development; also a thorough study is made of the political, industrial, and constitutional development during the National Epoch. Fiske's United States History will be used as a text book. ENGLISH. English I. Open to students who have completed Gram-mar II. This course embraces a critical study of the following classic works: Cooper, Last of the Mohicans; Autobiography, Franklin; Tennyson, The Princess; Scott, Ivanhoe; Shakespeare, Macbeth. English II. Open to those who have completed English I. Lockwood's Rhetoric will be used during the first three terms and completed. The last term will be devoted to the critical study of some of the following: Burke; Conciliation |
