Show ATHLETICS. Our New Coach. Unfortunate, and sorry as we were to lose the services of Coach Harker, who has in the past achieved such great success in Athletics, particularly in basket-ball, at Weber, and who left last year to take up the position of wrestling instructor at the Deseret gymnasium, we are yet fortunate to have Mr. William McKay as coach for the year 1911-12. In stepping into the shoes of Mr. Harker, "Bill" has taken upon himself a great task, but we feel that with the Student Body behind him and his team, he will fill the position very well. While this is his first experience as a Coach, McKay is not, by any means, new to the game and its finer points, as he was a star on the team of 1904-5 and also that of 1905-06, each of which had had very successful seasons and defeated some of the best teams of the state. Class Basket-ball League. A Class Basket-ball League has recently been organized by the class athletic managers, with the coach, and every class is urged to get its men out and get them in shape. A practice game or two has been played between the Senior and Junior teams already. From their appearance, there will be quite a fight for first place. Of course, we do not know how the other teams will play, so fellows arouse class spirit, and at the same time prepare men for the future by getting out and trying for these teams. Class Basket-ball Schedule. Oct. 30 Freshman vs. Sophomores. Oct. 31 Seniors vs. Juniors. Nov. 2 Freshman vs. Sophomores. Nov. 3 Seniors vs. Juniors. Nov. 5-Sophomores vs. Freshman. Nov. 6 Seniors vs. Juniors. Two winners of series to meet next week. ACORN 19 Our Prospects for Basket-ball. Of last year's team we have Watson, Ingles and Lindsay back with us this year. Clark, "Shorty" and McKay are holding down missions, while as far as we have learned, Call is the star cowboy on his father's ranch in Wyoming. The most promising of the new men trying out this year seem to be McKay, Belnap, Jones and Toone of last year's team. The boys are gradually rounding into shape, and are playing quite fast ball at present, considering the short time that they have been out. Watson is the same "old reliable" as last year with perhaps more speed, and is just as jolly and good-natured in the games. "Ole" has added a little weight, and plays even snappier ball than last year. Lindsay still has that habit of getting the "jump" on his opponent when the ball is thrown up at center. Bel-nap promises to develop into a phenomenon at shooting field baskets, and his work in general is in proportion. Although a little slow on his feet, McKay has the altitude to make a pretty good center. The other teams in the Northern Division seem to have lost as many as, or more men than has Weber. The State School for the Deaf is reported to have lost nearly all their men. The Brigham High School have only two or three of their old men back, and the B. Y. C. is in about Coach Wm. McKay the same bow, although they claim to have a fairly good team. If these reports be true, as no doubt they are, Weber-should run them all a close race for the pennant. At the Student Body meeting November 8th an amendment to the Constitution, drawn up by the Council, was approved by the students. This amendment provided for an athletic board composed of an athletic manager and two assistants, the president and secretary of the student body being the two assistants. The following persons were nominated for the office manager: Irvine Porter, Ray Toone, Everett Harris and Robert Jones. The former was elected and will take up the duties of his office immediately. He, with his assistants, will arrange for games and have charge of all advertising connected with the same; in short, he will have charge of business of the Athletic Association. |
