Show he waited for nothing more but ran to the dressing room where his friends helped him to get ready as soon as he came out he heard hurrah hurrah for jack stone who's all right who's all right jack stone sis boom sis boom , sis boom bah jack stone jack stone rah rah rah it vexed him to hear them cheering because he knew he could jump hig-het if he had had just another trial after a few blocks run he reached the depot in time to buy his ticket and board the train he didn't feel exhausted until after he was seated then he was oh so tired but he couldn't afford to think about that so he began to think how things would be if he would have remained a half hour longer he knew he might have saved his school from defeat then if he had remained his mother would have been disappointed and he would have broken his promise in n of cent ville in the moonlight by the window she was waiting for her only son whom she expected home that night on the eleven o'clock train he was a large broad fellow built just like his father i wonder if he has forgotten his promise surely you will not disappoint me she thought a few large tears rolled down her cheek every time a doubt entered her mind i have longed for the time when jack would be grown and i could lean for protection on the sttong arm of my son soon footsteps sounded on the pathway and mother and boy clasped each other in a fond embrace i knew you would come i knew you couldn't disappoint me was all she could say the next evening after returning from an enjoyable visit at his uncle's farm jack picked up the evening paper scanning the columns he came across the heading big victory for mountain college well how's that he said to himself jack stone jumped eleven feet nine inches in the pole vaulting and saved the day score 36 to 38 in favor of the mountain college they must have raised that stick a notch before i jumped but how on earth they did it without my knowing it is more than i can comprehend oh yes i know how it was i turned to find out the time and i remember seeing those two fellows standing there they must have done it hurrah hurrah hurrah for jack stone hurrah for mountain college stars i did make a mistake and he did marion a belnap 05 the earth the sky and all therein a blessing all our weakness slain protect us with thy love and might firm may we stand to conquer right protect us through this awful night firm may we stand and win the fight to be about us ever when that we may greater heights attain we're weakest and beset by sin thy richest love may we retain o may we e'er in wisdom move a dwelling gain with thee above o may temptations never blight our hopes but speed to loftier height our aims and thou approve our works forever god of love how she won the trustee over thirty dollars a month is all we can give you said mr raker the trustee of the school of a small country town to miss neta allen a young schoolmistress who had come to draw her first month's salary she received it with a mild thank you and as she closed the door he said well that is plenty for a laay school mistress job i wouldn't mind teaching myself just for a rest miss allen lived in the city and had graduated only the last year from high school but as her mother had taken ill and their income was so small she was unable to go on to college she had the will but there seemed no way she had come out to the small village of granger and thought that maybe she could save enough to go to college after she had paid her board and sent her mother a few dollars she had very little left but she would have been satisfied with this if she could have suc ceeded in teaching she seemed to get along fairly well with all the children except one and that was rolland raker the trustee's son he was very mischievous and what made him worse than ever his father encouraged him in it well time flew by until spring had come again miss allen seemed very discouraged in her teaching she did not like to use corporal punishment for she thought she could find some other way to gain the love and respect of her pupils one saturday morming in may she went out on the hills to gather flowers for nature study and also to decorate her rooms she filled her basket and sat down under a tree to rest she was thinking of the trouble she had had with rolland and of how he had tried her patie she \ s dete lined i i if s had t resort to whipping i had just as well have done it in the first place because i will never be rewarded for my patience if his mother were alive i know i could appeal to her while she was thus thinking she heard a scream she stood up and looked over a knoll and there she saw some little boys by the river and one little boy was in the middle of the stream just as she said oh he'll drown he wentunder she dropped her flowers and ran towards him he came up again and as she tried to hurry faster she stubbed her foot and fell but she was soon up and on she fled she jumped into the river and caught him just as he came out of the water the third time the whirlpool nearly took her under but by the aid of a branch over head she managed to pull herself to shore she succeeded in getting on the shore but the struggle had so weakened her that she became wholly unconscious she knew no more until she awoke in her own room as she moved her foot she felt a sharp piercing pain go thru her leg she lay quietly and it took her some time to realize where she was then she heard mrs tane the good lady with whom she boarded and the doctor talking mrs tane said well it is a shame to think that such a nice girl would risk her life for that raker's youngster i have heard her say myself that he caused her mote trouble than any other boy in school and then his father has been so hateful towards her but i hope now he'll feel ashamed of himself well joined in the doctor she is indeed a noble girl but i can't understand what she did to her ankle i am sure it is sprained the way it is swollen up just then to their surprise neta spoke up i remember now before reaching the water i stumbled and fell and believe i did it then how is rolland have you heard oh he is getting along better than he ought to the little scamp he had no business going into the watet this time of year anyway said mts tane and then she told how they found her unconscious and how they took her home in mr raker's light buggy miss allen soon recovered her health but it was two weeks before she could walk on account of her sprained ankle mr raker felt so ashamed of himsulf that he hated even to see her but when he
