Show I called President Dixon to tell him about the property, I called for him on February 18, 1947, we walked over the property. There was a foot of snow on the ground, but it was a beautiful clear day. We walked upon the flat place on the hill side where the present parking lot is for the stadium, we looked out over Ogden City and the vast valley beyond. It was a most beautiful sight with its covering of sparkling white snow. It truely was an inspirational scene to behold! President Dixon in his letter said I had great vision, as I looked over this property extending upon the hill side to near Harrison Boulevard. I visualized in my mind a campus with beautiful buildings and grounds. I turned from this scene toward President Dixon and said, . 'THIS IS THE PLAGE FOR WEBER COLLEGE.' I told him there was ten or fifteen acres which separated the Mills' property from Harrison Boulevard and that that property should also be purchased, as we wouldn't want any buildings in front of the College, but beautiful landscaping. President Dixon was very pleased and enthusiastic about the location and the acreage of the property. I tried to get Professor Mills to sell all of his property as I was sure that Weber would need more property in its future growth, but the 75 acres was all he would sell. We called a meeting of the committee and they were all in favor of the location and the purchase of the property. I searched the records and found there were eight owners of the property between Harrison Boulevard and the Mills' property. The eight owners were: George and Melba Larsen; Kenneth K. and Marine Gril Berger; Edwin G. and Grace Putman; Myron Bulcher and Hazel Manning; Alvin L. and Hazel Goodman; Wesley and Katie Couch; Albert and Myrtle Waite and Marlin E. and Josephine Edvalson. These people were willing to sell their property which was intended to be their future homes in this beautiful location, for the great need and future of Weber College. Their willingness to sell made the landscaping now in front of Weber College. Thanks to them. Fortunately all of these owners lived in Ogden and could be contacted. An agreement was made and a purchase price for each separate property. The total sum amounted to $25,000.00. After the purchase was agreed upon I made the recommendation that the community raise the money to pay for the property and then present the deeds to the State of Utah FOR THE NEW SITE FOR WEBER COLLEGE. That would place the State under the obligation to furnish the funds for the buildings necessary for the College. The committee approved the recommendation and our report was given to the College. They also decided that it should be done and proceeded to orgnize a committee to colect the funds necessary. |
