Show 15 ACORN Although we have lost in extemporaneous contests so far, we claim that "you can't keep a good fellow down," and we will endeavor to prove our claims in the coming contests and in all other school activities. Sophomore Happenings We are proud to inform the school that we still find it necessary to lead all the classes in every line, no matter whether it be physically, mentally, morally, or enthusiastically. We are a live bunch and still believe and say that we have the best basketball team in school. Our combination of Minson, Marshall, Shreeve, Linford and Brewer are making bewildering records. They have played ten games and suffered only two defeats. Their most recent victory was that over the Seniors to the tune of forty-one to twenty-seven. This was the first of the three games which are to be played between our men and the other teams for the inter-class basketball championship. With the same spirit and "pep" we expect to see our numerals on the track cup, as well as leading in baseball and tennis. To also show you that we are as well balanced mentally as we are physically, we take pride in claiming Mr. Louis Scoville as being a member of our class. He brought honors to our class by winning the Kasius-Taylor medal. Neither are we ashamed of the showing our extemporaneous speakers have made. We have a plan now well on way that will be the biggest feature of this year. A carnival that will and never has been equaled in this part of the country, will be given in the near future. Keep your eyes open for details. Freshmen Notes The Freshman class cannot be outdone. The Leap Year party, given in honor of the new students, was a great success. The girls, though timid at first, soon proved themselves equal to the new role and gave the boys the time of their lives. Not only the Freshmen boys enjoyed the "jolly-up," but dignified Seniors as well as Juniors and Sophomores, took part in the spirit of the dance. The Freshmen are not only alive in the social way. Derra Van Dyke and Wallace Walker came second in the extemporaneous speaking contest ,and two weeks later Maroni Allan and Delbert Wright also won second recognition. March 17, Ruth Sears and Ruth Evans contributed a piano duet to the devotional exercises, which was appreciated enthusiastically by the students. The class is now taking a lively interest in the plans which are being made to organize baseball and tennis teams. 4 The Alumni welcome the addition of two years of college work to the courses heretofore given at the Academy. We are willing to show our appreciation by supporting this addition to Weber, and feel sure that she will see some old time students back again. Those among the Alumni who have not yet begun their college education elsewhere, will find every incentive to return to their Alma Mater. It seems good to get back to Weber even for a day, and to return to our old associations for a whole year, or perhaps two, is enough to set one aflame with enthusiasm. We hardly expect Weber's married graduates to leave their domestic felicity and return to the prosiac pursuit of education, and we, therefore, feel that they should not be considered as prospective students at college. Of course, there may be some happy exceptions to this rule. We fervently hope, however, that those of the Alumni who have thus far escaped the complications of matrimony, will adopt some measure of preparedness against this last conquest of Cupid until they have completed two years of college work at Weber. Suppose we seriously consider the singular number. Some of last year's graduates are attending various universities and colleges, but with these exceptions it isn't unreasonable to expect a good part of the rest of the '15's to return to their Alma Mater. If these prospects were to be named by occupation, perhaps no calling in life would stand out so prominently as teaching school in the country. Even Cora Kasius might postpone the working out of her altruistic desires to better humanity and consent to shoulder once more the responsibility of materially assisting in shaping Weber's destiny. Considering still further these new pedagogues ,why can't the Academy have Firebell Taylor, Galding Engstrom, Chugg, Violet Anderson and Irma Bailey back again? The other occupations will all come in for their share. |
