Shields took over when Penguin grid fortunes were at low ebb and has brought the Clark eleven along to the point where they must be rated a serious contender for the conference title this year. Dutch has always had an active interest in the game, dating back to his high school days when he got his first taste of organized football. He played both line and backfield in his prep days at Stevenson, Washington; Eugene, Oregon; and Lincoln of Portland. He was graduated from the latter school. After graduating from high school, Shields enrolled at the University of Oregon, where he played varsity guard and earned a B. S. degree. One feature of a Shields-coached team is that the guards are always good, which may be traced to his playing days at Oregon where he learned the tricks of the trade. After securing a Master's degree at Columbia University and playing a couple of years of professional football, Shields took up the coaching end of the game, going to Ashland, Oregon, where he served as assistant at Southern Oregon College of Education. Dutch came to Vancouver High School in 1935, and it was there that he earned his greatest fame. His Trapper elevens were always powers in Washington prep circles, and his teams in 1940 and 41 were the only unbeaten teams in VHS history Shields-coached teams at VHS compiled a record of 76 wins, 32 losses, and 14 ties. Shields' first Penguin eleven copped fourth place in the conference with a 4-4 record. He brought the Clark eleven along late in the season to win their last three conference games.
