Show The Continuing Story of Weber's Money Madness Actually, though, the phrase, publications scholarships" is misleading. Scholarship implies some kind of grant. The truth is, every penny is earned. Student Government might disagree, though. For the longest time they thought that the editors were supposed to be paying the school for the right to print. Er, ah, oh yeah, no political funnies in the financial aids article. Sorry about that I got sorta carried away. The radio station manager at Weber's KWCR, who also happens to be a student, is given a waiver on his tuition. This is a small, though desirable stipend in comparison to the time required to manage a radio station. Athletic grants-in-aid help students-athletes. When the coaches on the hill spot an athletic specimen wandering around loose they can usually make the young man a rather tempting offer. Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors are all eligible for the privilege of representing the glorious purple and white as they face another collegiate rival. All of the transactions are kept under the scrutiny of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. They examine the athletes for the finest quality, texture, and strength before applying the stamp of approval, It means a whole lot when bartering with the big time skin dealers in the pro ranks. Fortunately, athletic scholarships have enabled many economically disadvantages, yet physically gifted individuals to attain college experience where he might have other wise become frustrated and disillusioned, leading the kind of life that slowly fades into apathetic silence. The actualization of the plastic, "vast silent majority." In the Ogden area there are a good many people who are willing to share their materialistic gains with the students of Weber State. The value of and education is apparent to these people, also. Groups and organizations who are offering aid to the college students of Ogden include in part: American Business Women's Association, American Society for Metals, American Society of Tool and Manufacturing Engineers, B. P. O. Does #27, McKay Dee Hospital Center, First Security Foundation, Fraternal Order of the Eagles, #2472 Auxiliary, Ogden Kiwanis Club, Hemingway Foundation, Hill Air Force Base Administrative Club, Mary Elizabeth Dee Shaw Scholarship Fund, Ogden Rotary Club, Steunenburge Memorial Fund, Utah Congress of Parents and Teachers, Utah Federation of Music Clubs, Weber County Teps Committee, Weber State College Employees Credit Union, and of course The Associated Students of Weber State College. The money available through these channels varies, as do the the qualification to the scholarships. Each of the Student Body officers receive a scholarship from funds of the Associated Students for their services rendered, (now the editors might have a pretty good argument about whether there was a service performed). The Federal government has several loan programs that are available to students. To qualify for a student loan you must first be a student (now that makes sense doesn't it?), and meet individual loan requirements. Types of loans available are: National Defense Student loans, Nursing Loan Program, Law Enforcement Education Program, Student Quarterly Loans and Federally Insured Loans. Repayment plans of the student loans differ somewhat as to do the amount that the student can borrow. Work-Study is a federally funded program designed with much of the same functions as all the other aids mentioned to help the student meet his financial needs and requirements. The amount of monetary assistance again varies with the circumstances and income of the student and that of his family. When considering a prospective recipient the financial aids officer must analyze the various factors of income expenses, assets and liabiltes, If it is determine that a sufficient need is present then the student is given an allotment for employment at libraries, laboratories, dining halls, maintenance, or other such work around the campus. The maximum amount of work allowed is 15 hours per week while the student is attending day classes on a full schedule. During quarter breaks, if he is still eligible, the student may work full time.
