Biographical/Historical Note The first annual hike to the summit of Mt Ogden was in 1922 (9,575 feet). A rally was held October 3, 1922 at 3:15 pm to encourage enthusiasm for the hike. Students and faculty met at 5am on October 4 to being the hike. During the 5am meeting, the school band played several tunes to add zest to the occasion. Rest and breakfast was taken at 8:30 am at Malan's Heights, an open clearing along the trail (which had been cleared the day before). The party of 365 people reached the summit at 2pm. Several talks were given by David O. McKay (president of the Board of Trustees), Aaron W. Tracy (school president), Willard Marriott (college student body president), and Llewellyn McKay (high school student body president) with a prayer offered by David O. McKay. Following the talks was a an American flag planting at the summit as gift for future generations from the Weber students of 1922-23. The crowd sang the "Star Spangled Banner" and the "Purple and White" to finish the ceremonies. Supplies had been carried by the students to the top.
