Show HORIZONS a OGDEN, UTAH Student opens ‘fire at gnevance hearing Standard-Examiner staff OGDEN — A student opened fire during a grievance hearing at Weber State University today, resulting in the wounding of three others in the crowded room before a campus police officer returned fire and shot him to death, authorities said. . Killed was Mark Duong, 28, of Ogden, who authorities said stood up, pulled out a handgun and began shooting people near the end of a hearing on harassment allega- tions. Police Officer Kent Kiernan, 40, one of those who was shot, fired back, hitting Duong several times, officials said. : A university attorney and another student also were wounded by gunshots. Gunfire rang out in Room 352 in the southwest wing of the Shepherd Union Building at 9:30 a.m., said Ron Cantera, WSU public relations director. About were in the room. a dozen people Cantera said the hearing was being conducted on allegations of a student harassing a married couple, at times on campus. It was the third such hearing in the case, he added. \ “We have a campus policy that protects students and employees from harassment on kampus,” Can- tera said. “Apparently some of the alleged incidents happened while pus returned the fire,” Cantera said. He said he didn’t know where the handgun had been concealed.
