Show a Farm Implements cE ODAY, the farmers of Weber County should look with both admiration and thankfulness to those men and women of 1849 who toiled all sum- mer to raise enough crops P4id to supply food for one winter. Mass production was impossible because of the few crude tools the pioneers had to work with. The men were made siaves to their work. The process of preparing the land was slow and difficult because it had to be broken with such inefficient tools. The sickle was used to cut the grain which was hand threshed. After the products were ready for market, they had to be transported in wagons or } Carts. During that time, many men in the east were working and experimenting on forms of machinery which would free the white man and make it possible for the farmers to raise larger and better crops. John Lee in 1836, and John Deere in 1837, made inventions, the result of which is our modern plough. The first sulky plow in America was patented in 1844 by H. Brown. That was soon followed by a disk plow, and later in 1854, the first practical motor plow was invented. Today, plows drawn by gasoline tractors are becoming common in Weber County. All of these have improved the quality of plowing and have lessened the work of the plowman. A self-acting rake was invented by Nelson Platt in 1848. In 1850 John E. Heath of Ohio, obtained a patent for a twine or cord binder. A machine which contained practically all of the essential features of the modern mower was patented in 1856 by Aultman and Miller. Possibly one of the greatest inventions was that of the reaper. This was invented in 1831 by McCormick. Shortly after Weber County was settled, the reaper was brought here, Today we have a variety of farm implements. er, mowing machine, binder, drill, harrow, The combined harvest- tractor, two-way plough, beet digger, corn planter, and numerous cultivators, are examples of the most modern machinery used in Weber County. The problem of transportation has been solved by trucks in use everywhere. With such efficient means of planting, and harvesting on a large scale is becoming very practical and economical. crops, farming Agriculture is one of the most important of all industries; inventions and and the numerous improvements made in the machinery it uses, have made it more remunerative to labor and less irksome.
