The first industry which was begun in Weber County as a result of successful agriculture was that of milling. The first flour mill was built at the “Old Fort” by Lorin Farr. In 1883 many more mills were constructed. One of these, which was operated by steam, was the first to adopt the “roller process” in place of the “stone grinding process.” ‘The first exporting of flour was in 1883. In 1873, H. B. Scoville started By this time, other industries had begun. the Ogden Broom Factory. The Utah Vinegar Works was begun by Frank Rothers in 1876. In 1883 Farr’s Woolen Mill was built; and in 1888 a small canning factory, the first of its kind in Utah, was built in Ogden. Products were brought from far and near to those factories. This necessitated better roads and bridges. In 1859 the canyon road, which cost $50,000, was built. At this early date, however, it was more urgent that the people build bridges. In 1876 a $14,000 bridge was built across Ogden River. In 1879, a double track wagon bridge was erected over the Weber River. Although our present roads and bridges show a marked improvement, there is an extensive program of road repairing improvement of our roads, the efficiency of our planned for 1929. The Canning industry also has shown remarkable growth. Today, 28 canning plants are situated within a few miles of Ogden. Each year products from about 7,000 acres of land go to the canners, for which the growers receive over a million dollars. ~The Amalgamated The sugar industry is very important in our country. Sugar Co., a model plant, cuts 900 to 1000 tons of beets per day and employs hundreds of men. In 1928 the poultry products amounted to three-fourths million dollars. | $1,164,256.80 was paid by dairies to farmers of Weber County.
