Mere proper care will be taken of all who need attention or medical aid. Student Activities. The Acorn. The official organ of the Academy is published entirely by the students, and is another means toward the development of strong, self-governing men and women. It has a circulation of about four hundred and fifty. Debating. The work in debating is under the personal supervision of a committee appointed from members of the faculty. The purpose is to give the students practice in public speaking, to familiarize them with simple parliamentary usage, and to encourage proper forms of drawing up a brief. Every class selects a team each year to compete in the inter-class debates. A silver trophy cup was given to the Academy by the class of 1905 to encourage debating and public speaking. The cup is awarded each year to the class having the best team, with the privilege of inscribing its numerals under the "winners," and holding it as a trophy until it is won by another team. The class of 1916 now holds the cup. Besides the inter-class debates a school team is selected from the student body to compete in the State High School Debating League. Every student has an opportunity to enter the contest for a place on the school team. WEBER ACADEMY 17 Public Speaking.Every year the Academy enters students in the contests in reading and public speaking to compete for the medals offered by the University of Utah. To select the contestants to represent the school, numerous 'try-outs" are held which give opportunity for practice in the preparation and delivery of addresses. Besides the contests for the state medals, there are other contests for trophies open to the students. Last year the E. A. Larkin loving cup was awarded for greatest excellence in public speaking. This cup was won by the Weber Academy. All students of the Academy are eligible for these contests. Physical Education.Since physical activities are necessary to the perfect health of the student, much attention is being given to the development of the body. Such healthful sports as basketball, indoor baseball and wrestling are introduced during the winter months, while track and field athletics and baseball take their place in the spring. To stimulate interest and to encourage school spirit, the Academy has joined the basketball league formed among the high schools of the state. Dramatics. In the spring of each year a play is presented by students of the Academy, who win positions in the cast through a try-out system. This activity is supplementary to the work in the English department. Interesting trips are taken to adjoining towns. |
