Students taking elementary training will spend one quarter of their sophomore year meeting actual school-room situations. They will be assigned to various schools in Ogden City, Weber County, Box Elder County, Davis County, and Morgan County, where they will teach under direct supervision of expert teachers in cooperation with supervision of the Educational Department at Weber College. WEBER COLLEGE COURSES OF INSTRUCTION Education EDUCATION 1. Principles of Education. Deals with the meaning, aims, and function of education and its relationship to other agencies and institutions. Three quarter hours. EDUCATION 2. Organization and Administration. A course dealing with: (a) Utah school law and means and agencies by which the law is administered. (b) Relationship of Federal Government to state and local units, as defined by State Board of Education. Three quarter hours. EDUCATION 3. Elementary School Curriculum. A study of the Utah State Course of Study for first six grades of the public school. Three quarter hours. EDUCATION 4. Method of Teaching Elementary Subjects. Treats the fundamental methods used in teaching the subjects of the elementary school curriculum. Three quarter hours. EDUCATION 5. Observation and Elementary Training. Essentially a laboratory course affording opportunity for practice teachers to apply the principles of teaching developed in the theoretical courses. Students meet actual school-room situations and receive the frequent constructive criticism of expert help. Twelve quarter hours. EDUCATION 6. Measurement of Elementary Education. The theory and technique of tests and measurements as applied to modern elementary school practice. Five quarter hours. EDUCATION 8. Elementary Educational Psychology. The principles of psychology as applied to the learning process. This course is given for elementary teachers. Five quarter hours. Requirements for Certification Five-Year Certification of Elementary School Grade A five-year certificate of elementary school grade is granted: (1) To an applicant who has completed a four-year high school course and two years of approved normal school or college work. (2) To an applicant who has taught successfully in Utah at least two years and who has completed at least 63 quarter hours of approved normal school or college work, including the prescribed work in English, Education and Physical and Health Education required for the life diploma. The five-year certificate under provision 2 is not renewable but is subject to a one-year extension, provided the holder completes at least 7 1 2 quarter hours of approved normal school or college work for each extension. (3) That his normal or college work includes 6 quarter hours of credit in physical and health education, 9 quarter hours in English, at least 6 of which must be in English composition; and 27 quarter hours in education. |
