Show The job was an 18, 000 ft. long ore haulage tunnel at Bingham Canyon, Utah. It was to be part of an $11,000,000 improvement to a mining installation belonging to the Kennecott Copper Corp. Utah drove the large-bore tunnel with equipment designed to utilize fully the size of the bore. Kay machines included a company-designed drill jumbo that mounted 10 Gardner-Denver hydraulic jibs and drills and allowed drilling on three levels simultaneously, a Conway Model 100-1 mucker that excavated 150 yds. per hour, 8 yd. Moran mine cars, 7 yd. Worthington- Ransome concrete agitators, 10 ton Greensbrugh electric locomotives, and a 60 ft. long Blau-Knox concrete form jumbo. Approximate cost of the project was $8,555,000. 13 - Toquepala Industrial Railroad in Peru for Southern Peru Copper Company. The cost of this facility was included in the overall project, and the railroad was built by Morrison-Knudsen Co. Inc. 14 - Carbon Plant - Kilns - Boilers in Texas for the Atlas Powder Company (Darco Corp.) in the amount of $806,000. 15- Warehouse and office in Pittsburg, California, for the C. F. Braun Company in the amount of $431,000. 16- Homestake-Sapin Uranium and Shafts The owners of this project were Homestake-Sapin Partners in Grants, New Mexico. The work performed included design, procurement and construction of a 1500 T.p.I. carbonate leach uranium ore processing plant and supporting facilities and also the sinking of the shafts. The total oost of the project was $10,976,000. One of the most important features of this project is that instru- ments automated it. The plant was automated for the following reasons: 1 - To give operators continuous information concerning process conditions and changes. 2 - To alert operators to off-normal process conditions as they are experienced and thus allow corrective action to be taken before serious upsets occur. 3 - To effect better, more uniform process control than is possible by operator hand control in order to insure quality products. 4 - To reduce operator workload, and hence, reduce plant operator and labor force requirements. |
