Show The 56-foot diversion tunnels, totaling 15,946 feet in length, required the removal of 1, 500, 000 cubic yards of rock. Mucking was done with 100-ton electric shovels with 3 1/2 cubic-yard buckets and 10-ton trucks. A four-level, truck-mounted drill carriage carried a total of 30 drills and drilled one-half of the bench in one operation. Wing sections on either side of top heading were drilled from two vertical bars. Diversion tunnels were excavated by first driving a 12-foot by 12-foot pioneer heading, which was then enlarged to the full 56-foot width but only 41 feet high, leaving 15 feet of invert for later excavation. The rock proved to be of excellent quality and no support was required at any point. Concrete lining was installed by means of a huge structural steel jumbo supporting the 1/4 inch steel plate wall forms. Lining averages 36 inches in thickness, with a minimum of 24 inches. An asphalt oil coating applied with compressed air was used for curing the side walls. The roof or arch section of the concrete lining, comprising 110 degrees of the circumference, was installed last. In addition to a jumbo supporting the 80-foot length of form, equipment included a separate gun carriage with two 2-cubic-yard pneumatic concrete guns and hoisting equipment, and separate traveler to support two placement pipes .
