Show Duehesne Water Tunnel in Utah for the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation in the amount of $728,000. The West Iron Mountain Water Tunnel in California for Metro Water District of Southern California in the amount of $1,885,000. Hoover Dam Powerplant - This powerplant is one of the largest in the world with a firm power output of 4,330,000,000 kilowatt hours annually and additional large amounts of secondary power available in some years. The plant was designed for an ultimate installation of fifteen 82,500 KVA, 60 cycle, 16,500 volt generators driven by 115,000 h. p. turbines, and two 40, 000 KVA, 60 cycle, 13, 800 volt generators driven by 55, 000 h.p. turbines. Foundation construction for these units was in itself, a major item of work. To illustrate the magnitude of facilities accommodated in this powerplant: The large generators are 40 feet in diameter and 32 feet high, and weigh more than 2 million pounds each. The shafts are 38 inches in diameter and weigh about 100, 000 pounds each. The large turbines operate at 180 revolutions per minute at a head of 492.5 feet. Construction of the powerhouse required 455,000 cubic yards of excavation, 240,000 cubic yards of concrete, 24,000,000 pounds of steel reinforcement and 12,000,000 pounds of structural steel. Hoover Dam Railroad - Construction of Hoover Dam, the greatest under- taking of its time, required a transportation system for the sole purpose of supplying the project with the vast quantities of cement, concrete aggregates, reinforcing steel, lumber, construction equipment and other supply requirements. A complete 26-mile railroad was constructed, with a connection to the government line at the rim of Black Canyon, with one branch running to the Arizona gravel deposits and the other to the Nevada side of the dam site. The road was not only constructed but entirely operated by the contractor, Six Companies, Inc. Dumplines and tunnels for the Bingham and Garfield Railroad in Utah in the amount of $208, 500. Geiger Grade-Virginia City Highway in Nevada for the Nevada Highway Department in the amount of $149,000. Wells - South Highway in Nevada for the Nevada Highway Department in the amount of $166,000. Stonehouse-Pony Springs Highway in Nevada for the Nevada Highway Department in the amount of $93, 000. |
