Title Firestone Automobile Air Conditioner
Description The Transportation Artifact category of the Harrisville Virtual History Museum contains objects related to transportation methods, from horses to the automobile.
Biographical/Historical Note This device consists of an external window-mounted metal cylinder without moving parts. Block ice was chipped into chunks and put inside the cylinder. The cylinder was equipped with a metal piece on the side that includes a groove that the window fit into when it was rolled up. The brace bar sat on the outside of the vehicle door in the area where the window comes out of the door. Ice and water inside the cylinder evaporated and in the process transferred heat from the surrounding air into cool moisture-laden air which was then directed inside the car through vents situated above where the cylinder rested on the rolled up window. Use of this type of car cooler began about 1930. The cooler worked better in lower humidity dry desert regions. It was especially popular among summer tourists visiting or crossing the southwestern United States. This particular unit was owned and used by John Benjamin Maxfield (1910-1989).
