On March 11, 1854, Uriah, leaving his mother and her family, started for Utah, driving a team for his neighbor, Mr. Bartlett Brown. At the time of the Fourth of July celebration in 1854 he was in Green River, Wyoming, and came to Salt Lake City, Utah, arriving July 15, 1854. He located in Centerville, Davis County, Utah. In the spring of 1855 he was baptized a member of the Church of Latter Day Saints, and in 1864 he moved to Morgan, Utah. He married Ann Richardson October 9, 1866, with Heber C. Kimball officiating in the Endowment House, Salt Lake City, Utah. Ann was the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Robson Richardson. She was born August 23, 1850 in Cramlington, Northumberland, England. She was baptized into the Latter-day Saint Church in April 1861 and on the 22nd day of the same month, left Liverpool, with her parents and their family on the ship Underwriter. Mr. Roberts was Captain, and Homer Duncan was President of the company. They spent six weeks on the ocean, arriving at New York City. They remained there for one month, then started for Utah with the Milo Andrews’ Company. About half way to Utah they joined Homer Duncan’s Company, arriving in Salt Lake City, Utah September 13, 1861. In February 1862 they moved to Morgan, Utah. Her family, like all others, had a hard time. They lived on potatoes for six weeks, never once tasting bread. They lived on the west side of the valley, a place known as Monday Town. Later they moved to Morgan City. She [Ann] was a devoted mother and also very attentive to the sick. The night was never too dark or too cold for her to go out to the sick. She cared for more than fifty babies at birth. She often made the comment, “I have no Page 114 desire to be rich, but I would like to have means that whenever I saw anyone in need I could put my hand in my pocket and help them.” She was loved and respected by neighbors and friends. She was a member of the Relief Society from its first organization in Morgan. Uriah and Ann were the parents of five daughters and one son: Elizabeth Ann, Mary Jane, Ellen Loretta, Joanna Upion, Eliza Salina, and Robert Calvin. Their posterity now numbers 32 grandchildren, 69 great grandchildren and great great grand children. She [Ann] died December 17, 1911. They are buried in the South Morgan City Cemetery. |
