Show • • • ELIJAH CHENEY Elijah Cheney was born in Great Barrington, Berkshire Co. Mass. Sept. 14, 1785 and when he was three years old moved to N.Y. ( Otsege Co) and after the death of his father (Zacheus) 1793, (Elihah's mother moved to a place near Lake Champlain and Elijah went to live with her brother Robert Granger. After living at this place 3 years, she moved to Marcellus, Onondago County, which is about 10 miles south west from Syracuse, about 1796.and she married a Mr. Chapple and had three children, Martin, Lucy, and Paty. She died in about 1800 and was buried about four miles west of the present town ofMarcelus.) In the year of 1795 his uncle moved to the west to a place called the military tract to town of Marcellus, Cyrega Co. when he was ten years of age. When he was fifteen he was bound out to a man by the name of Thomas A. Miller and lived with him three years. When he was 17 years old, 1802 Miller died and he went to live with another uncle his mother's youngest brother Issac Granger. In 1804, with his uncle he moved to the town of Pike, Gennesee Co. and lived there until 21 years of age in 1806. This was the year of the big eclipse of Jan. He then left his uncle and went to Botivig, Gennesse Co. which was afterward divided into two towns. Bethany being one of them where he lived and in 1807 his brother Calvin and himself took a job clearing twenty acres of land for Peter Putman then living in same town, and in 1808 he bought a piece of land of 120 acres which was then a wilderness and in the fall he commenced to clear up the land and while doing so he hired his board to one Robert Richmond and paid for board and lodging for 3 years. On March 14 lh 1811 he was married to Achsa Thompson and moved on their new farm and on May 19lh 1812 their first child David was born. He enlisted in the army June 20lh 1812 for 6 months and was stationed at Black Rock on Niagra river at the head of the falls and was discharged on Nov. 5lh and in 1813 he volunteered again and was in the battle of Black Rock and seen Buffalo burned December 24, 1813. In 1815 he moved to Bygua Co in the town of Sempronius and in 1821 he left and went east to about 12 miles to Scoot. Cortland County, and bought a timber farm and lived there many years. About the 1st of February 1832 he was converted and baptized on the 9lh of Feb 1832 by Jared Carter and was immediately ordained a elder by him. In 1835 he went to Kirtland Ohio and for the first time saw the Prophet Jos. Smith, three years before he traveled about and preached the gospel with Elder Jera Publisher. At Richland on the shores of Lake Ontario they baptized 10 members among them was President Wilford Woodruff and he was the first one to preach the gospel to and sell him a Book of Mormon. While in Kirtland he helped to build the temple and got his endowments on July 5lh 1836. He then started for Coldwell Co. Missouri but his wife and family took sick and they stayed in Coles Co Ill. over winter . In 1837 they were forced to leave Missouri and come to Hancock, Co Ill. And in 1837 he left Coles Co. Ill. Moved to Springfield. Sangamon Co Ill and later moved to Mersey Mason Co Ill where he bought 60 acres of land and made a farm where they lived till about t • • • 1842 when he left and moved to Nauvoo, Hancock Co Ill. And settled 15 miles east of there where he commenced breaking and fencing a new farm on the east side of Comp Creek 7 miles west of Layharpe, and built a new house and was prosperous when his wife Achsa took sick and died and was buried on So East comer of said farm. In month of Feb 1846 he received his endowments, washing and anointing. In June the same year he was married to Carry Hannon formally a wife of Oliver Harmon and a sister to Jesse P. Harmon and left in June the same year and went to Council Bluffs. Here he lived for 3 years and left 1849 and started for the Rocky Mountains in company with Brother Geo. A. Smith and others staring from Winter Quarters about the 15th of June 1849 and arrived in Salt Lake Valley in October and rented a house of bro Appleton Harmon and in 1850 he moved to the 10th ward. Died and buried in Centerville, Davis Co Utah. Joseph and Elizabeth Thompson was parents of Achsa Thompson and Joel Thompson, Robert and Issac Elijah Cheneys brother was Jacheus whos sons and daughters are as follow, Dwight, Ann, Hannah, Mary. One of the sisters of Elijah C married Benjamin Reynolds. Their children are Hm R., Elijah John David Emmaline and Nancy. Calvin another brother of Elijah. July 22, 1829 Joseph April 22, 1833 JOHN CHENEY John Cheney was the son of Elijah and Achsa Thompson and born Apr 27, 1824 in the state of New York ( Scott Cartland Co) and came to Kirtland Ohio and Nauvoo Ill with his father's family. Came to Salt Lake in 1849 and resided in 10th ward one year. Went to California in year 1850 retuning in 1857. Was married to Samantha Dickson in 1862. He died in Richville Co 15th of March 1875. He built the first boat on Great Salt Lake . |
