Show TOfJl and J ERRY During the ox-team days in Utah there was very little time for relaxation or r est , either summer or winter , though often it was badly ne eded . rJearly all of the men were farmers and when the long hard summer days were over and cold weather and deep snow settled over the valley , ·men turned their attention to the tasks of getting e verything in shape to start wor k again i n the spring . There were harnes ses to mend and greece , fenc es and feed racks to build and grain bi ns to be repaired , and a hundred other important tasks that made every hour a busy one . Fredrick Kingst on had two f ine s te er s named Tom and Jerry, that he was anxious to break in for a young team f or the spring work . He got hi s brother - in- l aw, Jame s Durrant , to help him and they made a two wheeled cart , which they called a go- devil , and took that and the steer s up on top of ~ome rather low hills where the snow was deep and unbroken , thinking that the steer s floundering in deep snow could not run away while they were becoming accustomed to the wooden yoke they had to wear on their necks . But the men had under estimated Tom and Jerr y . The minute the yoke was fastene d on the steers bol ted and r an at top s peed down the snowy hillside and onto the road yoke and all . Jim tried to follow but the hillside was steep and ·with the first bound he s hot into the air and for a moment looked like he was f l ying . Then when he struck the ground again he went rolling and tumbling head over heel s to the bottom of the hill , the soft , fluffy snow following him like a bi g white cloud . When he f inally got on to his fe et again he looked more like a snow man than a r eal man ., and the family having come out to t he hills to watch the breaking of the steer s l aughe d until t hey could hardly stand. - e Later the steers were found standing in a grove two or three miles away still wearing the wooden yoke to which they were fast becoming a ccustomed . LOOKING TO THE FUTURE Another story is told of Tom and Jerry . \'10 Aft er they had been broken in and were good old work steers, they seemed still t o rem-ember the old trick of running away . Mr. Kingston had dug a well on his farm near the house , but the well had not proven very successful for it kept caving in. The family had decided to f ill it up and dig a ne,., one in a less sandy spot . 1v1r . Kingston took some old lumber and built a fence around the old well to prevent anyone from falling in i t until he could get time to fill it up. Then one day while Tom and Jerr y were working in the field the steers became frightened and ran away , yoked together . They made a bee-line for the old well , and they paid not t he slightest attention to hhe wooden fence . Just dashed through it a nd fell head long into the well . Tom first and Jerry right on top of him . When Mr . Kingston reached t he well not a sign of Tom could be seen except his tail which was sticking straight up . 1•ilen gather_-ed and made a dug way and Jerry was soon broμght out not much hurt , but poor old Tom was dead with the yoke still on . When M.r . Kingston looked dovm at the poor old ox lying there he said, nwell Tom , when you get up on the resurrection morning with your yoke all on you'll be right ready to go to work , and by darm I ' ll put you to it too" . |
