Show UHERE THERE ' S A WILL 'fHERE ' S • WAY Soon after a road was opened up i n ~'leber Canyon a f amily by the name of 1~1or ris decided to move into I\1or gan Valley t o t r y to make a home f or themselves . The family was very poor and had no means of t r ansportation , so Mr . Morris and hi s wi f e deci ded t hey would strap t heir belongings on t heir ba cks and t r y to make t he tri p a fo ot • .r.1rs . I, or r i s was a tiny lit t l e woman we i ghing not r:tore than a hundred pounds , but i t was ne cess ary f or her to carr y a s har e of t he burden . Everythi ng that could be , was t i ed i n bundl e s and t hen the t hings wer e strapped on t he backs of t he two travel er s . It wa s a l ong har d and te dious journey and they were abl e t o cover onl y a few miles a day . Stopping often f or the litt le woman t o rest , out they did make some progress and they had hi gh hopes of bet te r ing their conditions in t he beauti ful l i t t l e gre en valley of I·lor gan . All went wel l f or the t r avel ers until t hey r ea ched Devil ' s Gate in :leber Canyon . Here they f ound a t oll bri dge had been cons t ructed acros s t he river and t oll had to be col le cted f r om pe de strians as well a s f or vehicles and ca t tle . Hr . £;~orr i s a sked the bridge- keeper how much the t oll would be fo r him and his wife t o cros s and was t old twenty- fi ve cents each . Poor Hr . l•1orri s , he ha d only tt1enty- fi ve cents to hi s name . He explai ned his pr e-di cament t o t he gate - keeper a nd ask what he could do a bout i t . The answer was "one of you can cross and t he other wi l l have t o go back . " That di dn ' t make sense to for . 1,1orris . They were on their way to establi sh a home . The wor ried coupl e withdrew a abort di stance and s a t dovm on the hi l l side t o thi nk and tal k thi ne;s over . Fi nal l y Hr . Morris retur ned to t.he E;ate - keeper and e asked him how much a person could take wi th him a cross t he bridge for twenty- five cents . The answer was as much as you can carry . There was another short cons ul tation , and then all the belongi ngs we r e unstr apped f rom the man ' s back and tied or f astened in s ome way to the body of the woman , leaving the arms free . Then they walked back to the end of the bridge , her e Mr . foorris stooped down Mr s . 11ilorri s put her arms around her husbands ne ck and with hi s aid she was boosted to his back and he wal ked across the bridge carry-ing his wife , and all his earthl y belongi ngs . They may not have laughed much that day , but they did many , many times a f terward . |
