Show C • • • HISTORY OF EDWARD WEBB PHILLIPS Edward Webb Phillips was born 22 May 1824, in Gloucester, Glouoestershire, England, a son of John Phillips and Eliz&beth Webb. He married Ana ·Drilllcwater on the 21st of December 184~ at St. Mary' 1 DeLode, Gloucestershire, England. They liTed on a cabin boat freighting ooal and other oommodities between Staffordshire and London. Most, if not al 1, of their ten children were born on the boat. Many times they had to fish one of them out of the river Thames. They took turns riding the horse which pulled the boat. Edward and his wife Ann joined the LOS Church on 11 Augua t 1850. They tried to arrive at Cosgrove on Sunday in order to attend LDS aerYice1 at the home of William and Phoebe Durrant. On May 5, 1864, with six children, four having died, they aet sail for Zion on the sailing ship Hudson, taking advantage of the churoh emigration fund. They were nearly eight weeks crossing the Atlantic Ocean. It took another aix month a to croaa from Winter '-'u&rters to Salt Lake with ox-team. They arriTed in Salt Lake on 11 November 1864, in the ?•car o. Stoddard com,eny. The first winter they -worked digging ditches on the Jordan riTer bottoms, often sleeping with their boots under their pillows to keep them from freezing so hard they could not get them on. Their fire was mostly from green willows and produced more smc k e than hei:. l; . To the~ it was a trying experience but their faith was built to last and by another winter t.~ey had learned much and were quick to put it into practice • In 1868 they moved to Porterville, Morgan County, Utah to work the Musser farm on shares. Later they bought the farm. They lived. there until his death 22 August 188?. One son, Lorenzo, died of small pox. The plague was so severe t hat it was necessary to wrap him in quilts to keep the flesh from falling off his bones. He died 17 January 1863 at the age of 14. The Phillips family grew the fir s·t luoern in Port.e rville, and cut it with a scythe. Edward ·,'febb Phillips was a faithful Latter-day Saint to the end of his days. He and his wife Ann were endowed in the Endowment House on 23 February 1867. Their children were sealed to them 9 October 1896. HISTORY OF ANN DRIN~NATER PHILLIPS Ann Drinkwater was born 1.5 April 1818. in Nestbury on Sever?), Glou-cestershire, England, a daughter of Charles Drinkwater and Elizabeth Hancock. She married Edwar.d ~e~b Phillips on 21st December 1844. After the death of her husband on ?2 August 188?, she wanted her son Hyrum to run the farm but he refused as she was t ·oo bossy. She sent to Snowville, Box Elder County. Utah, (near Holbrook. Idaho) for another son Thomas Webb Phillips, to come back to Porterville to take charge of the f:rm • It was said that she continued to run the lives of her family until her death :?5 February 1892, in Ogden, .
