Show MARRIOTT-SLATERVILLE CITY HISTORY JULY 2002 This year, perhaps more than ever, July 4, Independence Day, caused many thoughts to turn to the blessings and opportunities that are ours because we are privileged to live with the freedoms of this great country. The terrorists attack last year brought out greater feelings of patriotism and gratitude for liberties granted to us as citizens of this republic. In our City it is an occasion of double celebration as we marked our incorporation birthday. The activities began with the Fourth Annual Golf Tournament at 4:30 p.m. on July 2, 2002, at Mulligan's Golf Course. A potluck dinner was held at 7:00 p.m. at the Slaterville Park, on July 3rd. featuring chicken patties furnished by the City. Karaoke followed at 8:00 p.m. A 1K walk beginning at 7:30 a.m. started the July 4th celebration. It was followed by breakfasts held at both the Marriott and Slaterville Parks. The annual parade began at 11.00 a.m. Lunch, with hamburgers and hot dogs for sale, followed at the Marriott Park at 12:00 noon. Games featured in the afternoon included a firemen vs. community tug-of-war, Bingo, Candy Cannons, and a dunking machine. A Checker and Chess Tournament was held during the afternoon. The winners of the Chess Games were Clint Allred, Adam Brandley, and Adam Lewis. Dallin Holley won the Checker Tournament for ages 8-9. Age 10-14 winners were Joel Butler and Elijah Brandley, with Marcie Spencer winning the 15-18 age group. Girma Hunde was the winner of ages 18 and over. Of special interest: Hunter DeVries, age 6, beat Gerald Taylor, a more mature gentleman and long experienced player, in Checkers! All events were well attended and deemed successful. Kudos to Pam P. Slater who chaired the events. Council President Dennis Ilium, Delbert Hodson and Cory Meyerhoffer were all involved in a wild cow milking contest for the Ogden Pioneer Days Rodeo. When asked about his success, Mr. Ilium reported that he "did better than last year. I learned to let go of its tail and not be dragged around, although by so doing I got kicked." How's that for improvement? Pam P. Slater received the Mayor's Volunteer of the Month Community Service Award at the Council Meeting on July 18, 2002. The extra work she put in for the July Fourth Celebration this year was especially appreciated. She was also presented a gift certificate by Mr. Jim Ito for her hard work on that celebration. Business licenses for Bad Kat Landscapes and Yoga Jo's Inc. were approved after Randy Phipps presented the requests before the Council and further discussion by Council members. The Parks and Recreation Committee has a design for the park on 17th Street which will be formatted in a professional plan and will take some additional time. Bill Morris has indicated it will be a plan similar to the general plan, which will be brought before the council for discussion and advice. An ad hoc committee has been formed between the City and the Central Weber Sewer District to resolve dispute problems and funding issues for problems the sewer plant creates in the community. Orvil Holley and Rob Smout will represent the city on this committee, with Delbert Hodson as an alternate. President Ilium indicated that it will be at least a year before the 12th Street overpass will be completed. UDOT will close 700 South for about one week to work on the bridge over the interstate. Bits and Pieces Morgan Noelle Butler, daughter of Brent and Angela Butler, was born on July 26, 2002. Jack Claude Tippetts, 75, passed away on July 29, 2002. |
