Show Another one of his hobbies was seeing dramatic productions. As a young man, he secured a job at the Orpheum Theater. This was exciting and interesting times as he (in a sense) "rubbed shoulders" with famous musicians and dramatic actors and actresses from the East. These experiences fostered an appreciation for fine music and dramatics. He enjoyed the hobbies of experimenting in dry farming and raising turkeys. It was a thrill for the members of his family to enjoy fresh turkey eggs for breakfast. They were much larger than chicken eggs and were also used in baking. He also made his own apple cider. He was very interested in politics and appreciated and loved his county. He was a avid reader of the local newspaper especially all political information. He had strong political convictions. He felt those running for office should have the highest moral and educational qualifications. He followed attentively political speeches on the radio and detested any wrong doing in the government. He always exercised his right to vote. He took his family to town to see President Woodrow Wilson when he visited Ogden. This was a thrill for them as well as for Charles. In June of 1944 (one year before Charles retired), his family hosted a golden wedding dinner in celebration of Charles and Mary's fiftieth Wedding Anniversary. It was held in the fashionable Valley house in Huntsville, Utah. The celebration was to have been on March 28, 1944, but due to a stoke that Mary suffered, it was postponed until later. It was attended by the immediate family and close relatives. SENSE OF HUMOR Some of Charles's favorite sayings and jokes were as follows: When referring to another person"He a crazy pate" "Tougher than whit leather" Once Charles applied for a small loan. The loan officer kept asking personal questions as part of the application which dad thought was more than necessary. Charles finally said: "I didn't know this was a genealogy office!" and got up and left the place without securing the loan. Two people talkingfuture boss and potential new employee: "I want a job, what will you pay me?" "I'll pay you what your worth." "I'll be darned if I'll work for that!" Affectionate pie: when the top crust was dead stuck on the bottom. "I lost my vest, and searched all over for it for two or three days. Monday, I found it. It was under my shirt!" Onetime Charles varnished the wooden dining room chairs with linseed oil. They looked beautiful. But it was quite awhile before they dried and many a dress and pant stuck to the seat. |
