Show Dave played the piano. At one time when their father, John Marriott, was ill, they took their band to play for him. This pleased him so much my father said. My dad always had a piano in our home where he would often play melodic chords and make up his own tunes. In his lifetime, he played a violin, made a one string violin from a cigar box, and with a violin bow played many favorite songs of the day. He bought a drum and at one time drummed in a band his daughter Ida was a member of when they were not able to get a drummer. He also bought a banjo. He gave his own children musical opportunities of their choice. He was always very proud of his youngest daughter, Ida, who was gifted. At the age of four or five, she could play by ear tunes that she would hear. This eventually lead to her taking lessons from a concert pianist, Frederick Dixon. After Ida's husband died, music was her main source of income. She belonged to the Musicians' Union in Californiaa fifty year memberand played with some of the most talented musicians in the area for weddings, receptions, dances, patriotic events, etc. |
