COEDS TRAIN FOR WAR Females to Replace Many Males In Vital Federal, Private Jobs TO many, the phrase "women in industry" is now more than merely a newspaper headline. This is particularly true of coeds at Weber who have turned their hands to vocational studies denied the "weaker sex" before Pearl Harbor. Many are already employed in war plants and in private industry; many more are being trained daily by the enlarged staff of the vocational department. Courses in which the girls are now taking an active part include aircraft engines, aircraft sheetmetal, aircraft spray gun, drafting, electricity, machine shop, motorized equipment, welding, leather and canvas, blue print reading, power sewing RIVETING, NO LONGER THE EXCLUSIVE DOMAIN OF BROAD-CHESTED HE-MEN. An instructor in aircraft engines tells how three of his students were recently made shop foremen at Hill Field. Others have travelled to the Pacific Coast to obtain employment in shipyards, aircraft factories, and defense plants. There is no doubt, authorities tell us, that before long, many more women will be drafted to relieve able-bodied men now at work, but who could serve better as members of our fighting forces. If it is true that manpower for industry, as well as manpower for war, is soon to be placed on the draft basis, pictures on this page indicate that we can also prepare ourselves for a draft of womenpower. As an example of the service rendered by graduates of the vocational courses for women, operators of power sewing machines do work on leather and canvas for aircraft. They sew parachutes, parachute harnesses, leather facing for airplane cockpits, airplane upholstery, wing fabrics, and pilot's kits. Spray gun operators and classes in painting and doping design and paint insignia for aircraft as well as apply the necessary finish to wings and fuselage. Coeds at Weber are preparing themselves for an all-out draft of womenpower. COMELY VIRGINIA HEWETT OPERATES AIR - BRUSH IN AIRCRAFT "PAINTING AND DOPING."
