Show Wildcats Hibernate Early Above: HUSKY SOLDIERS FROM FORT DOUGLAS USE COMMANDO TACTICS ON WILDCATS. Below, left to right: COACH DAVIS, CO-CAPTAINS JOHN DIXON AND GENE GREEN, CENTER AND HALFBACK. Coach Bob Davis1 Weber Wildcats found war-time travel restrictions, the lure of army-navy enlistments, and high-paying jobs too much for their tawny hides, crawled back into their lair with the season two-thirds gone. Even so, they brought with them the battered carcasses of two opponents, the high-flying service team from Hill Field (score: Weber 19; Hill Field 0) and the lowing mavericks of Mesa College, last year's J. C. champs (Weber 7; Mesa 6). They absorbed punishment from Fort Douglas (45-0), Navy-Marines of Logan (7-6), and Idaho, Southern Branch (19-0). Clockwise, from upper right: WAYNE GRASER, DOUG STRINGFELLOW, K EN GRASER, MELVIN McALLISTER, GRANT BISHOP, DIL YOUNG, Q. RICH, RAY HARTMAN, CARL DE YOUNG. Scheduled opponents who were left opponentless were B.A.C. of Cedar City (who, at last report, were leading the J. C. circuit with 4 wins, no defeats), Carbon College (no pushover this year), and Dixie College. The abbreviated season was not without its moments, particularly when, with the game against Mesa already scheduled, Coach Davis' squad arrived in Grand Junction with eleven players and three substitutes, hobbled off the field after sixty minutes of muddy play, winners by a single point. Left: REX ALVORD, FOOTBALL STUDENT MANAGER. Right: WAYNE GRASER, VETERAN HALFBACK OF '41. |
