Show Literary The New Gymnasium If there is one thing that Ogden needs more than anything else, it is a good, modern gymnasium. Some one must make the start. The Weber Academy has always been alive and progressive, and it is only to be expected that the plan to build a gymnasium should be formulated and executed by the Academy. Although the proposition has been considered before, and then laid upon the table, it is assured that the gymnasium will really be built this time. Every member of the Academy Board of Education is enthusiastic about it, and will assist materially as well as morally. All of the business men of Ogden agree that the undertaking is a very worthy one, and several have said that they would contribute liberally. The greatest encouragement, however, is from President Joseph F. Smith, Trustee-in-Trust of the church. He has promised that the church will contribute one-third, on conditions that the other two-thirds be secured from other sources. This means a gift of $20,000.00 to be spent in Ogden for our gymnasium. A committee from the faculty, consisting of Principal W. W. Henderson, Joseph Ballantyne, Wilford O. Ridges, William M. McKay and LeRoy E. Cowles, has been appointed to labor in connection with the members of the board in raising funds and pushing the work along. Messrs. Shreeve & Madsen, local architects, have drawn up plans for the building, made estimates and secured bids for all portions of the construction, finishing and furnishing". There will be no better gymnasium in the west. The building will be 72x150 feet, two stories high, with full basement underneath. The exterior wall will be of dark red pressed brick, with white sandstone trimmings. The basement will contain the plunge, the locker rooms, the showers, the bowling alleys, wrestling room, steam room, rubbing room, a room for the home team and a room for the visiting team. The plunge will be 20x60 feet and from four to eight feet deep. There will be a special locker room and special showers for the girls and a private entrance to the plunge room. On specified days the girls may have exclusive right to the plunge, as well as to all the other advantages of the gymnasium. |
