Show 16 ACORN Junior Class Notes A change is as good as a rest, and that's what we got at the Junior matinee, when we danced the quaint Folk dances given under the direction of Miss Loa Roberts of Salt Lake City. Come again and have some more fun. We lost the championship it's really sad but cheer up, boys, there's another year left in which to show your great skill at basketball. Don't lose hope, because you know you have the ability, and we do, too; so what do you care if nobody else does? Miss Adelaide Cousins was awarded the prize at the Junior class party for being the most popular young lady present. The prize was a beautiful hand mirror which will be of much service to her in keeping those little locks arranged just so. It's too bad we can't afford to give one to each of our girls. Sophomore Doings Every one (except those who didn't come) said that the Sophomore matinee was great. There was a dandy crowd, although it was cold and stormy. Just see what the Sophomores can do in spite of the weather. The Kasius-Nelson oratorical offer was received with much enthusiasm by the class of '15. Enthusiasm, combined with good material in the class, is sure to make some kind of a hit. The class party, like everything else, was the event of the season. The best program, the most delicious refreshments, the jolliest crowd, and what more could we want to make it the time of our lives. We had almost too much fun. Freshman Report Our Freshmen class is now fully organized, and we have had our first class party. The members of the class responded eagerly and the party was a thorough success. The first comers amused themselves by playing pit and other games until the crowd came, and the latter part of the evening was spent in dancing. During the intermediate part of the evening a short program was conducted by Horace McCustian, Miss Catherine Bassett being one of the entertainers. Refreshments were served, and the officers proved to be very good waiters and waitresses. The party concluded with some spicy class yells. We hope to continue to work for the interest of Weber, and do not as yet see anything to make us lose hope. ATHLETICS The Race for Supremacy Since the last issue of "The Acorn," the basketball championship of the school has been decided. To promote interest in the games among rooters and players, a pennant was offered to the winner. The players on all four class teams worked hard for the championship; they were not, however, supported by their classmates as they deserved to be. The pennant was won by the Seniors, who did not lose a game. The Sophomores were second, being defeated twice by the Seniors. Third place was captured by the Juniors, and the hard-working Freshmen were forced down into the last place. Sophomores vs. Freshmen These teams met October 29 in the first game of the league. The Freshmen were large and gritty, but lacking in experience. The Sophomores were smaller than the Freshmen, but faster and more experienced. The game was very rough from start to finish. The score was 32-16 in favor of the Sophomores. On October 31 these teams met again in the third game of the class series. This game was stubbornly contested by both teams. The Freshmen had improved a great deal by the experience of the first game. The first half ended 16-15 in favor of the Sophomores. In the second half the Freshmen seemed to be lucky in throwing baskets, yet they could not finish on top and were defeated, 38-27. By winning this game the Sophomores won the right to play the winners of the Junior-Senior series for the school championship. Seniors vs. Juniors October 30 was the day set for the second game of the series which was to be played between the Seniors and Juniors. The Seniors were confident of winning by a large margin. Indications, at least, pointed in that direction. The Juniors spoiled their chances by holding them to a score of 6-4 during the first half. The game ended with the Seniors ahead, 38-7. The second game between these teams, and the fourth of the class league, was played November 1. This game was slow and a poor exhibition of basketball, the Seniors winning, 31-8. The Seniors and Sophomores were tied for first place. |
