Granite had won the championship the year before oy winning the tie game, and now again Weber and Granite stood pitted against each other for the final honors. To lose meant more than it ever did before. To win meant the pennant a good gym reputation everything. The night that had been so anxiously waited for had come and the game of games was to be played. The team felt the heavy weight of responsibility upon their shoulders and the students wore anxious, nervous expressions. Long before the game was called the balcony was filled with enthusiastic spectators and the main hall was crowded to the side lines. Both schools were there in full force cheering and shouting for their teams. In the dressing rooms the two teams were preparing for the battle which was to decide our fate. When all was ready Coach Harker said: "Boys, you know that Granite's team is in perfect condition and that they have done nothing but practice for weeks. Although they have been our superiors in the past, remember that we are on our own ground, and with this advantage we stand a better show. Now that the time has come, let us go into this game, heart and soul. Fight fair and die hard. If we should happen to go down in defeat, let us do so with the Purple and White flying, with a feeling that we have done our best. Remember the gym that victory will bring, and now good luck to you!" As the visiting team entred the field a mighty shout was raised, but a moment later, when our own boys stepped into view, pennants and caps flew into the air and deafening cheers shook the very building. The signal was given for the teams to take their places, and a breathless silence fell upon the whole crowd. Every nerve was taxed to the limit and every eye was on the ball. The whistle blew, the ball was thrown in the center and the game was on |
