Show 4 THE ACORN The cherry punch is splendid (of course cherries to be in harmony with the occasion). The floor is fine; one cannot help but dance. "Yes, Prof. Kerr, I will be delighted to dance this two step with you. You look fine in costume. Don't you wish we could always dress like this ? Wouldn't it be fun? I am glad you like my dress; I think it is a dream, Thank you, I enjoyed the dance so much." "Edyth, do you think Victor will get around to dance with any one else but Mabel?" They look just like Martha and George, don't they? Oh! Ved, doesn't Lawrence Greenwell look killing? He looks about three times as tall as he does in his ordinary clothes and twice as gawkey. Yes, Lawrence, this dance is yours how splendid you look." "My! this punch is good. I hope I am not drinking too much. I'm having a great time. But how strange everything looks; this punch has surely gone to my head! Look at the decorations, the hatchets are chopping down the cherry trees. Our dignified Miss Cleghorn has one of the paper hatchets and is doing the 'Carrie Nation' act over the punch bowl. Everybody's wigs are on crooked and the whole place is topsyturvy. There's Prof. McKendrick and Ridges, wrapped in a flag and dancing together. It certainly is time that I am going home. There, I have burned my foot. Goodness, have I been asleep and dreaming? I certainly have, for there is no yellow brocade here and all the hatchets and George Washingtons have faded away and my books take their place. Although we won't all be dressed as George Washingtons, we will be there to honor his birthday and have a rousing good time. L. B., '10, THE ACORN 5 Dramatic "Lulu," an interesting drama, by Miss Furniss, author of "A Box of Monkeys" and many other good comedies, confronts those who are working to gain honor in our dramatic club of this year. It is a well written comedy, which contains brilliant conversation, a sparkling flow of language, and a very interesting plot. Eighteen students entered the tryouts and were held the first week in February. The winning cast is now working diligently for rehearsing, preparing costumes and in every way getting ready for the presentation of the play. When all is in readiness, one month will be spent in visiting the different settlements, and then they will appear in Ogden to show us what they can do. MODERN SHORTHAND In laying aside a system of shorthand that has been tested and found to be worth while for a system that is young and as yet has won no fame in the commercial world, we feel the uncertainty of the movement, inasmuch as we had no personal experience with it, and do not know positively what it means for our school. Nevertheless, the fact that it is established in some of the most progressive schools in the United States and has been successfully maintained speaks well for "Modern Shorthand." Not only the name, but the system also, is modern. Pre-eminent among the qualities that make it a desirable system are these: Its simplicity of makeup, its ease of acquirement, and its great speed both in writing and reading. This system is rapidly supplanting the Pitman. |
