Show 18 THE ACORN Of this legislature one third of the men in the house have had previous legislative experience, and nearly all of the members of the senate. Of the nine new senators, Kuchler of Weber, Wilson of Summit, and Stookey and Marks of Salt Lake, have graduated into the senate from the house. Badger, Hyde, Seevy and Burton come new into their work, but have served in public capacities. A student is measured by what he does, not by his heighth or weight, or what he says he does but by results. All Soul's day, whereon the graves of the dead are decorated in all Roman Catholic countries, was observed with due solemnity in Paris on November 2nd, especially in the animal cemetery upon the island of the Seine, near Osmieres, in which lies buried all that is mortal of 15,000 dogs, 4,000 cats, 10 parrots, 7 horses, 6 monkeys, 2 goats, 9 canaries, 4 pigeons, 1 cow, 1 goose, 1 panther, and 1 lamb. Affecting scenes occured at the dog's cemetery, where black-robed women assembled in large numbers to pay tribute to their departed pets. Of the many new devices that modern invention has recently given to the world, perhaps there is no more ingenious contrivance than the electric chronometer invented by a Frenchman. By means of this chronometer an automobile race can be timed even to the one-hundredth of a second. One of these instruments is placed at the starting point of the race and another at the finish, the two being connected with a charged wire. When the start has been made a current of electricity is immediately sent through the line, which deflects a needle, making a dot upon a paper on a revolving drum. At the finish another dot is made upon the paper; the exact time may then be discovered by means of the scale which connects these markings. The remarkable drouth which has prevailed over a large area of our country during the late summer and fall has been felt severely in Kentucky. For ninety days the central portion of that State was without the slightest trace of rain without the slightest trace of rainfall and the protracted dry spell even affected the underground river in Mammoth Cave, for at places in Echo River where there has always been ten or fifteen feet of water the channel became perfectly dry. Generally the surface of the water and the roof of the cavern are so near to each other that the stream can be navigated for only a short distance, but now the skiffs can travel for miles, and THE ACORN 19 many new inlets and grottos have been discovered. The character and thickness of geological strata at any given point may be ascertained by drilling. This operation, however, gives no clue to the direction of the strata through which the drill passes. An ingenious device, recently invented in France, enables the geologist to ascertain this by means of photography. The less you require looking after, the greater is your reward, Elbert Hubbard Prof. Barker: (in Physical Geography) "What is the weight of a square cubic foot of air?"
