Show 12 The Acorn HOPE Did you say that you get discouraged, And don't know just which way to go ? Then follow the Savior's directions, He's travelled the way, high and low. He has marked out the path very clearly, He has driven the stakes here and there, And if we but follow his footsteps, He will guide and direct us with care. We need not go stumbling in darkness, He's given a light that will shine Through trials and sorrows and sadness Which come into your life and mine. The Father created all children, And placed them below upon earth, The first in the garden of Eden Receiving their temporal birth. He desired to try and to test them, To see if they would do his will, No matter whatever beset them, In temptation, sorrow, or ill. T o those who have strength to prove faithful, To all of his laws here on earth, He has promised a place in his kingdom, Where all dwell in gladness and mirth. So do not get sad and discouraged, Remember just why you are here; And pray to our Father in Heaven, Whose love casts out sorrow and fear. L. M. '04 The Acorn 13 For Humanity On the lawn in front of Mr. Taylor's large farm house two bright girls were lounging with nothing to do a dangerous condition for two bright girls to be in; for two weeks of vacation had sufficed to bring back the roses to their cheeks and to restore any energy that might have been lost during the school year. "Oh, I wish I could do something for humanity!" cried Mabel, lifting her arms high above a mass of brown curls. "For instance" yawned Helen. "Well, if I had a million dollars, I should like to build a school just for girls, with halls full of window seats and sofa pillows, and flowers everywhere and- "So far, you haven't done much for humanity; because you lack the million. Suppose you try again on a smaller scale." "Fifty thousand "would build a fairly respectable home for orphans and that would be a good thing." "Another air castle shattered all for the lack of fifty thousand!" "Now tell me, Helen, what is the use of having good impulses if they are to evaporate because we haven't the money to work them out?" "Have impulses that are more practicable and see that they are worked out," replied Helen calmly. "I suppose my charity must be limited to this little village and to my allowance of ten dollars a month for pin money. And you know yourself that people never get thanks for that kind of charity. In this whole town there isn't a person who hasn't plenty to eat and comfortable clothes to wear. Now, will you please suggest a plan of campaign?" "You are in the midst of a host of starving young people," said Helen as calmly as before. "Starving! Helen Taylor, you know very well that there isn't a family in the place that lacks food and clothing." "No, I admit that they have plenty to eat and plenty to wear, but they are starving for something to read. You know, we have the largest library in town, and it is only a small one, and besides ours there are only two or three good magazines coming through the mail. In the face of all these facts, why not establish a public reading-room and make an effort to get the boys and girls to spend their time with us there, instead of at the saloon, in the store or on the street corners?" "Do you really think we could do it?"cried Mabel enthusiastically "Of course we can do it if father |
