Show 18 ACORN On the evening of November 10, with both floors of the auditorium filled with students and friends, Mme. Frieda Langendorff, assisted by Guy Callow, violinist, and Kurt Wanieck, pianist, opened the lecture course with a series of musical numbers. The fact that every number was encored showed the appreciation of the audience. The Kellog-Haines singing party of November 22 was pronounced one of the most charming entertainments ever given on the lecture course, and patrons will be pleased to welcome them back, if ever such occasion may be afforded. The needs of the hour, as advanced by Geo. D. Alden, were given to the people in bits of philosophy done up in humorous packages. Honesty in business and a higher plane of man and womanhood were two of the most urgent needs of the hour. The Chorister's Class is perhaps one of the most useful courses the school affords. At present there are forty-three students enrolled. This department offers the following subjects: English, Harmony, History of Music, Sight Singing and Conducting, making in all twelve hours credit. The pupils are regular students of the Academy. The professors are Jos. Ballantyne and H. Ivy Cleghorn. Dancing is an art which has interested most people since the dawn of history. To some people it has a greater fascination than to others. Thirty-four members of the school not only like to see good dancing, but also like to be good dancers, this being shown by the fact that they have availed themselves of the opportunity of taking lessons. Immediately after the holidays another dancing class will be organized. The return of all the old star basket-ball players of the school was celebrated by a basket-ball game Friday evening, Nov. 25. The Alumni boys played the school team in our own hall, and in spite of the fact that they were greatly out of practice, they played a good swift game, and were defeated only by the score-? After the game all members of the Alumni, their friends and both teams took part in an informal reception. Several musical selections, both vocal and instrumental, were rendered by the Misses Carrie and Irma Browning. Dainty refreshments were served, while toasts and speeches were given by Principal Henderson, Profs. Cowles and Lind, and seven or eight members of .the Alumni. Cupid has been busy in the Alumni Association as elsewhere Alice Taylor, '05, of Harrisville, was married on Thursday, Dec. 8th, to Lee Shurtliff; also a former student of the Academy, and now an employe in the money order department of the Ogden postoffice. The members of the Alumni join in wishing the young couple all the bliss that Hymen can bring. |
