Show 12 THE ACORN watched it, the thought struck him that to put one in each boy's boot would be the cause of some loud "howling;" but he could not stay there all night and to miss the fun was out of the question. His next thought was to put one or two in the bed, so he caught that one and as it was growing dark, hastened to find another. He soon found a large one; and his thoughts were then busy on the question, how to get the boys out of the tent. Just as they were ready for bed, he went down the river a little and shouted. Out rushed every one to find who it was. Meanwhile Eli slipped in and put the craw fishes in Dave's and Tom's bed. Soon the boys returned declaring to each other that the call sounded like "Eli's gentle voice." They no sooner got into bed than, with one bound, Dave was out of bed again, yelling, hopping around on one foot, and shaking the other frantically. As soon as the light was lit and the boys saw the crawfish clinging to his toe, they fairly shouted with laughter. Dave was not to have his solo very long, for Tom, who was rolling on the bed exhausted from hard laughing, gave a similar leap and joined in Dave's tune. He shook his hand so violently they needed only to guees what was hanging to his finger. It is unnecessary to add that every boy had tears streaming down his cheeks, but Dave and Tom were the only ones who were not rolling on the ground holding their sides. At this point they heard some one outside laughing and recognized Eli's voice. They ran out, but it was so dark that they could see no one, and Eli, well satisfied with his prank, laughed all the way home. Never afterward did he miss a chance of reminding Dave and Tom of the two fish they caught. Florence Woolley, '07. THE ACORN 13 THE WAY TO SUCCESS. The way to success is a broad one. 'Tis the highway we traverse each day. There's a road we call "Failure" close by it. We must watch lest we fall in its way. We must work with our unceasing efforts, If we wish for success in the end. We must scatter the bright rays of sunshine, And make all the world be our friend. We must not give away to the temptings That meet us each day on the road; But strive all our weakness to conquer, Blot from us each burdening load. We must work towards a nearer perfection. We must toil and must strive to gain truth. We must never cease working and doing, To gain what we can in our youth. We must work when old age comes upon us. We must work with all strength we possess. We must mind not what others are doing; Till then we can gain no success. The way to success is a grand one. Let us try all its blessings to gain; For with it God's blessings descended, And with it, all heights we'll attain. Sarah M. Williams, '06. |
